|USAFA, Colo. - Junior Tommy McKee (Holt, Mich.) registered a season-high five goals, but the Air Force lacrosse team came up short in an 8-6 loss to Marquette Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium.|
The offense was slow to get going, with the Golden Eagles scoring the only two goals of the opening quarter. The Falcons did not get on the board until the 5:04 mark in the second period, when McKee scored off a feed from classmate Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.). It would prove to be the only goal of the second quarter, as Air Force went into the intermission trailing 2-1.
After Marquette pushed its advantage back to two goals with a man-up score 12 seconds into the third period, the two teams traded goals through most of the period, with the Golden Eagles taking a 5-3 lead with less than two minutes on the clock. However, the Falcons tied the game for the first time with a pair of goals from Crampton and McKee in the final minute of the quarter.
Marquette regained the lead with its second man-up goal in the first minute of the final stanza and neither team was able to find the back of the net again until Kyle Cassady (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) found McKee for his fifth score of the day with 4:22 remaining. The Golden Eagles added another score from Bryan Badolato, his third of the day, with just under three minutes to play and tacked on an insurance goal in the final minute to hold on for the win.
Air Force outshot Marquette for the game, 37-24, but Golden Eagles' netminder JJ Sagl came up with 14 saves, including nine in the first half alone. The Falcons did have an advantage on face-offs, winning 13-of-16, with Erik Smith (Jr., Golden, Colo.) coming up with 9-of-10 draws.
