Albany vs. Delaware
March 12, 2005
The Game Story:
Newark, Del. – Dave Powers and Joe Trentzsch scored five goals apiece, as Delaware dominated UAlbany, 18-9, in a non-league contest on Saturday, March 12 at Rullo Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Rensselaer’s Harkness Field, but moved due to poor weather in the Capital Region.

Delaware (4-2) used a six-goal third period to take control. Sophomore midfielder Alex Smith, who won 22 of 25 faceoffs, took the opening two draws of the second half, as the Blue Hens scored a pair of goals 25 seconds apart.

Jordan Hall, who had two goals and two assists, ignited a run of five unanswered goals off Smith’s first face-off win. Powers, a senior midfielder, then found the net three straight times, including a man-up goal and another following a turnover. Trentzsch handed his squad a commanding 13-4 lead with 7:51 left in the stanza.

UAlbany (1-1) trailed 5-3 midway through the second quarter, but the Blue Hens, who are coming off a 10-6 campaign in 2004 and are receiving votes in this week’s USILA national top-20 poll, followed with two goals in a 36-second span. Cam Howard, an All-Colonial Athletic Association midfielder, set up both scores. Trentzsch finished off Howard’s pass with 5:33 left in the period, before Dan Deckelbaum tallied on his team’s next possession.

Senior attacker Luke Daquino had two goals and three assists for the Great Danes, who face 13th-ranked Massachusetts in Troy, N.Y. on Tuesday. Brendan Russell added a pair of goals, while Merrick Thomson totaled one goal and two assists.

"They played their best game to date," UAlbany coach Scott Marr offered. "(Chris) Collins made three or four saves at point-blank range when we had a chance to get back into the contest. I was disappointed in our energy. We could not gain any momentum with our inability to win faceoffs."

Delaware’s Collins finished with 10 saves, while Howard matched a career-high with five assists to go with one goal. UAlbany goalkeeper Kevin Rae stopped 14 shots.
