Army vs. Hobart
April 24, 2004
The Game Story:
WEST POINT, N.Y.--Hobart posted its first victory over a ranked opponent this season with a 14-8 triumph over 13th-ranked Army. The win secures the second seed in the Patriot League Tournament and, coupled with a Bucknell win over Colgate, eliminates the defending Patriot League Champion Black Knights from next weekends tournament.

Clinging to an 8-6 lead late in the third quarter, sophomore attackman Mike Conklin (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.) scored a man-down goal off an assist by sophomore defenseman Matt Murphy (Haverford/Havertown, Pa.). The tally energized the Hobart offense, which scored three straight to end the third quarter with an 11-6 lead.

Army scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to creap within three, but junior midfielder Nate Molinari (Oswego/Oswego, N.Y.) sandwiched goals around a score by junior attackman Nate Hill (Hamburg/Hamburg, N.Y.) to secure the victory.

Molinari finished with a career-high four goals, while Hill contributed two goals and two assists. Senior attackman Mark Williamson (Corning East/Corning, N.Y.) also enjoyed a four-point afternoon (1-3).

Hobart's defense is to be commended for holding the Black Knights (4th in the nation in scoring offense) four and a half goals below their season average. In goal, junior Dan Valente (Mt. Hebron/Ellicott City, Md.) finished with 13 saves to earn the victory.

Hobart's win in West Point, is just the second victory for the Statesmen in 13 trips to the banks of the Hudson.

Hobart returns to action at 3 p.m., on April 30, at Navy. The Statesmen will tangle with third-seeded Bucknell.
