|The Game Story:|
|LEWISBURG, Pa. - Matt Scheel scored two goals, including the game-winner with 2:24 remaining, to lift No. 20 Army to an 8-7 victory over Bucknell on Friday night at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Nick Marks (Barrington, Ill./Salisbury School) scored twice for the Bison, who lost to Army for the fifth straight time, all of them one-goal games.|
The Black Knights solidified their Patriot League Tournament position by improving to 6-4 overall, 3-1 in the Patriot League. Bucknell fell to 4-6, 2-3, and now must defeat Colgate in their league finale on Apr. 23 and get help to qualify for the postseason.
Adam Fullerton made a career-high 17 saves for Army, including three in the final 2:30 of the game to protect a one-goal lead.
Typical of recent Bucknell-Army games, this one was punctuated by numerous momentum shifts. The Bison scored twice in the second quarter to take a 4-2 halftime lead, but during the halftime break a lightning storm struck, resulting in a delay of about an hour and 15 minutes.
Following the extended break, Army scored twice in the third period to even things up, one goal coming from Scheel and another from faceoff man Tony Vozzolo, who a draw cleanly and sprinted toward the cage for the tying tally.
Jon Burton opened the fourth-quarter scoring to give Army a 5-4 lead, its first since the opening minutes. The Bison rallied, though, tying it on a nifty goal from Perry Menzies (Upperco, Md./Hereford), who shook a defender, spun and scored with a hard bouncer with 13:02 left.
Nearly two minutes later John Togneri (Longmeadow, Mass./Loomis-Chaffee) came from behind the net to score and give Bucknell a 6-5 lead.
Later in the period, Army regained the advantage by twice solving Bucknell's 10-man ride. First, goalie Matt Baran (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) got caught out of the net on a restart, and John Walker fed Mike Obringer for a point-blank goal. With 6:42 left, Army defenseman Matt Luyster scored into an empty net from the midfield stripe to put the Black Knights back in front 7-6.
Still, the Bison would not quit. With 4:30 to play, Menzies passed to Marks, who scored from the right side to tie the game for the fifth time. Bucknell won the ensuing faceoff, but with 2:30 to play Fullerton made a big save on Steve Case (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), then made a long outlet pass to Tory Sokol, who fed Scheel for the go-ahead goal with 2:24 left.
Bucknell had two more good looks in the closing minutes, one from Menzies with 1:20 left and one from Case with 25 seconds to play, but Fullerton was up to the task both times.
Bucknell outshot Army 42-24 and held a 31-23 edge in ground balls. Baran finished with six saves for the Bison, while Menzies had a career-high three points on a goal and two assists. Four of Bucknell's seven goals came from the freshman class, including the first career goal from Mike Thon (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield).
The Bison return to action next Friday at Air Force at 5 p.m. (Eastern). It is the first of a two-game Colorado swing, as Bucknell will also visit Denver on Sunday afternoon.
