Bucknell vs. Saint John's
February 18, 2007
The Game Story:
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Austin Winter (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) had a goal and three assists in his collegiate debut, and the Bucknell men's lacrosse team braved bitter cold temperatures to turn back St. John's 10-4 in the season openers for both teams Sunday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.

Bucknell's 40th season of varsity lacrosse began with a balanced scoring attack, as seven different Bison found the back of the net. Sophomores Joe Mele (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Perry Menzies (Upperco, Md./Hereford) along with freshman Tim Brandau (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) scored two goals apiece, while Winter, Nick Marks (Barrington, Ill./Salisbury School), Doug Buckley (Wantagh, N.Y./Chaminade) and John Togneri (Longmeadow, Mass./Loomis-Chaffee) tallied once each.

Sophomore Matt Antonelli (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made his first collegiate start in goal and made seven saves. Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School) played the final five minutes and logged three saves.

Justin O'Donnell scored on St. John's second shot of the day just 1:32 in to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead, but the Bison scored the next six goals and went to the locker room with a 6-2 lead. Winter's first collegiate goal tied the game at 1-all with 9:52 left in the opening period, and just 42 seconds later Winter fed fellow rookie Brandau for his first career tally, giving Bucknell the lead for good.

Later in the first quarter, Togneri tried to feed a pass to Mele in front of the goal. Mele could not catch it in traffic, but Red Storm goalie Dave Saccente was screened and the ball snuck into the net for a 3-1 lead. Brandau, Menzies and Mele all scored in succession to open the second quarter to make it 6-1 before Graeme Gillespie ended St. John's 25-minute scoring draught 3:09 before halftime.

Marks opened the second half scoring for the Bison, but Drew Schanen responded with the game's only extra-man goal with 5:19 left in the third to make it 7-3. Mele and Menzies got the next two to make it 9-3 and end any hopes of a St. John's comeback. Gillespie picked up his second of the day with 10:53 left, but Buckley capped the scoring for the Bison with a 20-yard shot with 5:24 left.

Bucknell outshot St. John's 42-28 and had a 40-32 edge in ground balls. After struggling in the faceoff department a year ago, the Bison controlled the X in this one using a pair of newcomers to the position. Junior Rick Carolan (Wellesley, Mass./St. Sebastians) went 8-for-13 and senior Danylko Kulczycky (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) was 4-for-5, giving the Bison 12 wins in 18 attempts, including all five in the first quarter. Senior Steve Case (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was excellent on the wings, scooping four ground balls on faceoffs while turning a number of faceoff wins into scoring chances.

Defensively, senior Greg Sowyrda (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) led all players with six ground balls, while fellow close defensemen Evan Burns (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin) and Billy Haire (Darien, Conn./Darien) were solid all day, limiting St. John's to only one goal per quarter.

Bucknell returns to action next Saturday, taking on former Patriot League rival Hobart at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's School in Baltimore.
