Butler vs. Quinnipiac
March 16, 2005
The Game Story:
Freshman Cliff Smith's fourth goal of the night gave the Bulldogs a 12-11 overtime win over Quinnipiac in a neutral site game played in Dublin, Ohio Wednesday night. Freshman Nick Vosburgh scored with two seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into the extra period. The Bulldogs won their second straight to improve to 2-2 on the season, while Quinnipiac falls to 0-3.

Butler jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the contest before the Bobcats slowly chipped away at the lead in the second half. Quinnipiac scored three straight goals to take an 11-10 lead with two minutes to play. The Bobcats won the face-off, but Butler gained control with 30 seconds remaining and Vosburgh found the net to send the game into bonus time.

"We did a great job with face-offs tonight," said coach Stan Ross. "Phil Brauch won 17 of the 20 he took. While we shouldn't have given up the lead, it was great to see us handle some adversity and find a way to win."

In addition to Smith's four goals, Vosburgh had two goals and an assist. Five other Bulldogs scored goals as well. Senior Sam Ashley had 12 saves for Butler, going the distance between the pipes to pick up his second win of the season.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The game serves as the Great Western Lacrosse League opener for both schools. The face-off is set for 1 p.m.
