| LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Butler lacrosse team defeated VMI, 15-2 in the
Keydets' 2003 season-opening game on Monday afternoon at the Washington and
Lee Astroturf Field.
The Bulldogs scored three goals in each of the first two periods to build a 6-1 halftime lead. Butler scored three more goals in the first 4:13 of the third quarter en route to a six-goal stanza and 13-goal victory. Senior attackman Ryan Ward (Victoria, B.C./ Mt. Douglas) led the Bulldogs in scoring with four goals, with two coming in the first quarter. Freshman Attackman Douglas Mathias (Amherst, N.Y./ Amherst) scored three goals for Butler, all in the second half. Junior attackman Leo McInerney (Syracuse, N.Y./ Marcellus) and senior attackman Matt Dixson (Arlington, Va./ O'Connell) tallied VMI's scores. Keydet junior goalkeeper Brian Ward (Novi, Mich./ Novi) made nine saves on the afternoon. Butler's senior Brendan Winkler (Miami, Fla./ Palmer Trinity) made seven stops, before coming out after the third quarter. VMI will play again on March 4, when the Keydets travel to Duke for a 7 p.m. contest. Butler will play host to Canisius on Saturday at 4 p.m. |
