|Goldberg Goal Lifts Bulldogs Past Butler 10-9|
Yale Wins Second Straight One-Goal Game
March 10, 2004
BOCA RATON, FL - Seth Goldberg's goal with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter capped a come-from-behind, 10-9 victory for the Yale men's lacrosse team over Butler University at St. Andrews School.
Goldberg, a junior attacker who tallied three goals in the opening day win over Drexel, took a feed from Dan Brillman (1 goal, 2 assists) and whizzed a shot past goalie Sam Ashley that hit the top corner of the net from 10 yards out.
Goldberg, who had two goals against Butler, was able to take the final shot of the game after the Bulldogs fought back to tie the game with 1:11 left. Ryan Capilupi (one goal) won the ensuing faceoff and Andy Shay, victorious in his first two games as Yale head coach, called timeout to set up the game-winning play.
"I am happy that we were able to win another game, but we still have a lot of work to do," said Shay, who got goals from seven different Elis. "We have played two one-goal games and have been very fortunate to come out on top both times. I do see signs that we are starting to click."
The Bulldogs, who led 1-0 after Ned Britt (2 goals, 1 assist) opened the scoring in the first quarter, trailed 3-1 after one and 5-3 at the half and did not get the lead back again until the final tally of the night.
Freshman goalie Jordan Ellis made his second start in net and came up with 10 saves, two more than he had last Sunday at Drexel. Ellis stopped three shots in the first and third frames.
Senior captain Scott Kenworthy led all Yale scorers with four (2-2) points. Other Elis putting up points included Chris Kempner (1-1), Van Sternbergh (1-0) and Marcus Ruopp (0-1).
The Bulldogs next faceoff against Vermont at Weston, Fla., on March 16 at 7:30.
