|The Game Story:|
|Hobart used a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter to earn an 11-6 victory over the Canisius College men's lacrosse team on Tuesday night at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs drop to 1-3 on the season, while the Statesmen improve to 2-4 with the win.|
"Just like our previous game, Hobart got a five-goal run late that we couldn't stop," said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. "They won key faceoffs and got a timely man-up goal to win this game. I was proud of our effort but we aren't getting the results that we are looking for. We just have to find where we went wrong, regroup and come back stronger on Saturday against Manhattan."
Freshman Tim Edwards led the Griffs with three points on the night, netting a goal and registering two assists. Senior Travis Gibbons recorded a team-best two scores, with senior Simon Giourmetakis and freshmen Brandon Bull and Cody Gould each adding one tally.
Senior Sean Callahan recorded 11 saves in net for the Griffs, while seniors Brendan Murphy and Ryan O'Hagan each registered a game-high three caused turnovers to anchor the Canisius defense.
The Statesmen opened the game strong, netting the first three goals of the contest to grab the early advantage. Hobart scored two man-up goals 37 seconds apart before a third goal with 3:49 remaining in the first for the 3-0 lead.
Canisius answered back and pulled to within one by tallying the next two goals. Gibbons scored the Griffs' first goal of the game with 11:20 left in the second frame before Edwards scored off a pass from Giourmetakis with five mintues left in the half. Hobart tallied one final goal in the period as the teams headed into the intermission with the Statesmen leading, 4-2.
The Griffs took advantage of multiple man-up opportunities in the third quarter to get back into the game. Edwards set up Gould and Giourmetakis for extra-man goals at the 12:41 and 7:24 marks to pull Canisius even, 4-4.
Hobart answered with two goals by Sam Miller to reclaim its two-goal advantage but Gibbons finished the third-quarter scoring with a man-up goal as the teams headed into the final stanza with Hobart leading, 6-5.
For the second-straight game, a run to start the fourth quarter doomed the Griffs. Hobart netted the first five goals of the period, scoring all five goals in a 2:28 span to take control of the contest. Bull netted the final goal of the game for Canisius - his first collegiate tally - but the Statesmen held on for the 11-6 victory.
Hobart finished the game with a slight edge in shots, 41-40, and won the faceoff battle, 12-8. Miller and Alex Love both netted hat tricks for the Statesmen, with Peter Zonino recording 11 saves in the winning effort.
Canisius returns to MAAC play on Saturday, hosting Manhattan. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is scheduled for 11 a.m.
