Canisius vs. Marist

The Game Story:
Marist ended the game on a 4-0 run and held the Canisius College men's lacrosse team off the scoreboard for the final 19:37 to earn a 9-6 victory at the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday. The loss drops the Griffs to 2-6 and 2-2 in MAAC play, while the Red Foxes improve to 7-3 and 4-0 against conference foes.

Juniors Adam Jones and Nick LoCoco led the Griffs with three points each on the afternoon. Jones scored a team-best two goals and added an assist, while LoCoco led Canisius with three helpers. Senior Mike Benzinger and sophomores Jon Domres, Simon Giourmetakis and Jimmy Haney all added a goal for Canisius.

The Red Foxes started the game strong, scoring 52 seconds into the contest and adding another goal 3:30 later for the early 2-0 advantage. Canisius answered back when LoCoco found Haney in a man-up situation and then fed Giourmetakis 1:45 into the second to knot the game at two.

Marist quickly reclaimed its two-goal advantage with a pair of goals 1:22 apart. Domres brought the Griffs within one when he scored the final goal of the half with 8:28 remaining in the second period. The teams entered intermission with Marist leading, 4-3.

Jones led the Griffs in the third period as Canisius claimed its first lead of the day. The junior scored off a feed from Giourmetakis to tie the contest at four 2:55 into the half. Jones then added his second goal of the day with 7:02 left in the period off a pass from LoCoco. After Marist tied the game, Jones set up Benzinger for the 6-5 lead.

The Red Foxes answered when Corey Zindel scored an unassisted goal with 3:17 left in the third. Marist then controlled the fourth quarter, scoring all three goals for the 9-6 victory. During the period, the Red Foxes won all four faceoffs and held the advantage in shots, 12-4, and ground balls, 8-3.

Marist outshot the Griffs during the game, 28-21, and won 12 of the 18 faceoffs. Zindel led the Red Foxes with six points on three goals and three assists, while Sam Altiero stopped six shots in goal to earn the victory.

Sophomore Kyle Bell made his first career start for Canisius and recorded four saves.

Canisius takes a break on Tuesday for its final non-conference game of the season against Hobart. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: With his three assists, LoCoco is now tied for sixth in the program's history with 74 career assists, matching Mark Miyashita (2000-03) ... LoCoco also raised his career total to 96 career points and is just four points shy of becoming the 16th player in school history to record 100 career points ... Canisius, who went 2-for-4 with the extra-man advantage, has scored at least one man-up goal in every game this season ... The Griffs entered the week tied for third nationally in man-up offense ... The road team won for just the third time in the 17-game series between the two schools ... Marist is now 2-6 all-time at the Demske Sports Complex.
