Canisius vs. Mount Saint Mary's

The Game Story:
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Matt Warner and Eric Seifert each scored three goals to lead visiting Mount St. Mary’s College to an 11-8 win over Canisius College in MAAC Lacrosse League action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius falls to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Mount improves to 5-4 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 4-0.

The Mount jumped to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Tilghman Herring and Warner under six minutes into the game. Canisius answered with a goal by Kevin Ross with 25 seconds left in the opening quarter and Michael Blocho knotted the game at 2-2 at the 4:09 mark of the second frame. Mount St. Mary’s would surge ahead with two goals, before Tom Hensel cut the Mount lead to 4-3 with 2:50 left in the first half of action.

Mount St. Mary’s would out-score Canisius 5-2 in the third quarter to take a 9-5 lead after 45 minutes of play and it would add the first two goals of the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 11-5 on Jason Werner’s 14th goal of the season at the 5:11 mark. Canisius would attempt a rally, scoring three goals to pull within 11-8, but the Mount used tightened defense and ball-control offense to hold off the Griffs.

Dan Carey, Kevin Ross and Alex Khalil all scored two goals for the Blue and Gold. Angus Dineley took the loss for Canisius, posting 10 saves and allowing nine goals in over 44 minutes of action. Tom Kucharczak made three saves in relief. Dan Whitehurst recorded 13 saves in the win for the Mount.

Both teams struggled with the extra-man, as Mount St. Mary’s went scoreless in six attempts and Canisius was 1-for-2. The Griffs out-shot Mount St. Mary’s 38-36, while the Mount held a 25-22 advantage in ground balls.

Canisius returns to action Tuesday evening, April 12, as it hosts Colgate at the Demske Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
