April 23, 2005
The Game Story:
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior Dan Carey and sophomore Kevin Ross each scored four goals as the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team posted the first eight goals of the game on the way to a 12-6 win over Virginia Military Institute on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius improves to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the MAAC, while VMI falls to 5-7, 2-4 in the league.

Canisius blitzed the Keydets’ defense by scoring the first eight goals of the contest and chasing VMI goalie Dan Frank to the bench just over 22 minutes into the game. After Ross recorded his 18th goal of the season with 7:31 remaining in the second quarter, VMI registered its first goal of the game by Erik Rohrmann with 7:01 left. Another VMI goal by Will Collier cut the Canisius lead to 8-2 at the halftime break.

Ross and Carey each tallied goals midway through the third quarter to increase the Griffs’ margin to eight goals. Rohrmann scored his second of the game for VMI with 4:23 remaining in the quarter, but Ross’ man-up goal just 18 seconds into the final quarter restored the Canisius lead to 11-3. VMI would pressure the Griffs in the final stanza, recording 23 shots in the period, but Canisius sophomore Angus Dineley was up to the task and held the Keydets at bay to preserve the victory.

Dineley posted 12 saves in the win for Canisius, including nine in the second half. Frank allowed eight goals and made seven saves for VMI, while Matt Hook recorded two saves in relief for the Keydets. VMI out-shot the Griffs 43-36, despite a 17-2 first quarter advantage in shots for the Blue and Gold. Canisius held a 37-26 advantage in ground balls and forced 26 VMI turnovers.

Canisius returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Hobart College for a 4 p.m. non-conference tilt with the Statesmen in Geneva, N.Y.
