Canisius vs. Wagner

The Game Story:


Senior Bryan Jack anchored a strong defensive effort for the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team, leading the Griffs to a 7-4 victory over visiting Wagner on Saturday. With the victory, Canisius won its third-straight game and improves to 3-6 on the season and 2-3 in MAAC play.



Jack matched a career high with 15 saves while allowing just four goals on the afternoon. The senior stopped all 11 shots he faced in the second half as Canisius was able to pull away for the victory. Junior Matt Barkas led the Griffs with a career-best 10 ground balls in addition to three caused turnovers.



Offensively, Canisius was led by freshman Simon Giourmetakis, who netted two goals on the afternoon. Sophomore Nick LoCoco also added two points on a goal and an assist, while junior Tim Rowley, sophomores Adam Jones and Tom Vivian and freshman Jimmy Haney each added a goal.



Wagner (1-11, 0-4 MAAC) scored the game’s first goal with 2:05 left in the first period and then added a second score 33 seconds into the second to take an early 2-0 advantage.



The Griffs answered with the next four goals to take the lead. LoCoco sparked the run with a goal at the 7:07 mark of the second period and then found Haney for a man-up score to knot the game at two. Rowley then notched his first goal of the season, scoring on a transition opportunity to give the Griffs their first lead of the day, 3-2. Jones capped the run by forcing a Wagner turnover and beating its goalie 1-on-1 for the 4-2 advantage. However, the Seahawks responded two goals in the final 1:48 as the two teams headed into intermission knotted at four.



Vivian broke the deadlock for the Griffs, scoring an unassisted goal with 5:13 left in the third quarter. The score was the first of the sophomore’s career. Giourmetakis tallied the final two goals of the game to secure Canisius’ third-straight victory.



Mike Hurley led the Seahawks with two points, scoring a goal and adding an assist, while Peter Rubin made 11 saves in goal.



Canisius returns to action on Wednesday, squaring off with MAAC foe Siena. Game time in Loudonville, N.Y. is set for 3 p.m.



Game Notes: In his last three games, Jack has posted a goals against average of 4.33 and a save percentage of .723. During the second half of those three games, Jack has recorded a goals against average of 1.33 and a save percentage of .923 ... Canisius has won all 10 games with Wagner ... The three-goal margin of victory is the closest for the Griffs against the Seahawks ... Canisius has not allowed more than seven goals in its last six games.
