The Game Story:


The Canisius College men’s lacrosse team scored the last four goals of the game to rally for a 7-6 victory over Robert Morris on Tuesday. The Griffs won their second-straight game and are now 2-6 on the season, while the Colonials fell to 8-5.

Freshman Jimmy Haney led the Griffs with three points, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Sophomore Nick LoCoco added two points on a goal and an assist, while juniors Matt Barkas, Alex Caldiero and John Minieri plus sophomore Greg Michael each recorded a goal.

Senior Bryan Jack anchored the Canisius defense with eight saves, including four in the fourth quarter. Junior Tim Rowley won 10-of-15 faceoffs and picked up a team-best seven ground balls.

The Colonials opened the scoring 2:43 into the contest but the Griffs responded just seven seconds later when Rowley found Barkas for his second goal of the season. Robert Morris closed out the first period with a goal and then tallied the only two scores of the second quarter to head into intermission with a 4-2 lead.

Haney scored the first of his two goals 4:13 into the second half but the Colonials answered with the next two scores to take a 6-3 advantage with 11:49 left in the game. Michael started the Griffs’ comeback with an unassisted goal at the 10:32 mark. Caldiero then brought the Griffs within one with 7:49 left in regulation and LoCoco knotted the game just 29 seconds later.

With the game tied at seven, Robert Morris was whistled for a slashing penalty with 1:33 left in the game. The Griffs took advantage of the extra-man opportunity when Haney found the back of the net off a feed from LoCoco, scoring with just one minute left in the game. The Colonials won the ensuing faceoff but Jack recorded a save and the Griffs forced a late turnover to hold onto the victory.

Canisius outshot the Colonials, 38-23, and held a 31-21 advantage in ground balls. Corbyn Tao-Brambley led Robert Morris with three points on two goals and an assist, while Sal Barcia stopped six shots in the loss.

The Griffs return to MAAC play on Saturday with a home contest against Wagner. The Griffs welcome the Seahawks to the Demske Sports Complex with game time scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game Notes: Canisius rallied from down three goals in the fourth quarter for the first time since 1994. The Griffs trailed Keuka 9-4 in the fourth quarter before scoring the final six goals of the game to win, 10-9 ... Canisius won for the first time this season when trailing at halftime ... Haney’s three points are a career high and his game-winning score was the first of his collegiate career ... Rowley has won 36-of-49 faceoffs in the last four games (73.5 percent) ... Barkas’ goal was his second of the season and the third of his career for the long-stick defender ... Canisius has won all five meetings with Robert Morris.
