The Game Story:
Dolphins win team best seventh game to clinch first winning season for the fourth year program

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior David Goldman (Baltimore, Md.) scored a career best four goals and sophomore Ari Waffle (Manlius, N.Y.) added three goals and three assists to help the Jacksonville men’s lacrosse but the finishing touches on a 5-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season with an 11-10 win today over Canisius.

The fourth-year Dolphins (7-4; 5-1) also secured the first winning season in school history while setting a team record with their seventh victory of the year.

Goldman help set the stage early for JU scoring twice in the first quarter for a 3-1 advantage. Waffle then added his first score of the game in the second quarter to give the Dolphins a 4-3 halftime lead.

The second half continued to be a back-and-forth affair between the two schools. The Griffs finally tied the game at six with 5:40 remaining in the third. However, Jacksonville reclaimed its two-goal lead with a pair of tallies 1:23 apart in the final three minutes of the quarter to head into the fourth with an 8-6 advantage.

The teams traded goals in the opening two minutes of the fourth but Tim Edwards tied the contest for Canisius (3-9; 2-3) with his second and third goals of the game.

After Jacksonville won the ensuing faceoff, Canisius backed up a wide shot and had a chance to grab its first lead of the game. However, the Dolphins’ Pete DeLuca (Millersville, Pa.) made a save off a shot and James Trentini finished on the other end for a 10-9 lead. The Dolphins then tallied a second-straight goal, this one from TJ Kenary, who scored with the man advantage, for an 11-9 lead with 5:03 remaining.

The Griffs continued to fight and pulled back to within one scoring with just 72 seconds remaining. After winning the faceoff Canisius a chance to tie the contest in the final minute of play. However, Joe Rautenstrauch attempted to send the ball back to the X and DeLuca intercepted the pass. The Dolphins successfully cleared the ball and killed the remaining time to hold on to the 11-10 victory.

The win marked the third one goal victory by the Dolphins in MAAC play this season and their fourth one goal win of the year.

Jacksonville completes the regular season at Mercer next Saturday before heading to the MAAC Tournament hosted by Canisius May 3-5.
