The Game Story:
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Rick Neward (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lead the Canisius College men's lacrosse team to 9-8 victory over visiting Mercyhurst College Wednesday evening at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs improve to 4-5, while Mercyhurst falls to 6-4.

Neward took a pass from sophomore midfielder Greg Campbell (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and fired a shot from 10 yards out past Laker goalie Mike Rispoli to cap a three-goal comeback in the final quarter. Campbell led the Griffs with three goals, including the game-tying goal at the 2:18 mark of the fourth. Mercyhurst's Ian Komorek led all scorers with four tallies.

Canisius jumped to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore middie Justin Masley (Sturgis, Sask.) 5:09 into the game. The Lakers poured on the offense at that point as Komorek scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage after the first quarter. A Canisius goal by Campbell cut the lead to 3-2 at the 8:25 mark, but Mercyhurst scored two quick goals to bring the Lakers' lead to 5-2. Campbell scored his second goal of the game with 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter as the Griffs headed into the halftime break trailing 5-3.

The Griffs jumped on the offensive early in the third quarter, scoring two quick goals to knot the game at 5-5. Masley scored his second just 1:20 into the quarter and sophomore attack Chris Tocin (Orchard Park, N.Y.) tallied the equalizer at the 4:17 mark. The tie did not last long as Mercyhurst scored just six seconds later on a goal by Troy Ledbetter to take a 6-5 lead. Canisius would rally to tie the game once more in the third as sophomore attack Mike Roff (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored with 2:54 remaining.

Mercyhurst scored the first two goals of the final quarter, building an 8-6 lead before Canisius would stage the last rally of the game, scoring three goals to seal the win. Junior Matt Condon (Chittenango, N.Y.) began the attack with a goal at the 2:01 mark and Campbell scored his third on the night just 17 seconds later to knot the game at 8-8, setting up Neward's last-second heroics. Senior Dave Pfleuger (Hamburg, N.Y.) posted 13 saves on Senior Night for Canisius, while Rispoli made four saves for the Lakers.
