Colgate vs. Bucknell
April 21, 2007
The Game Story:
HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/21/2007)—Colgate University senior Brendan Hurley (West Islip, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals, including the game-winner, as the 19th-ranked Raiders upended No. 12 Bucknell, 9-7, in men’s lacrosse on senior day at Tyler’s Field. The win gives Colgate the No. 2 seed and the Bison the No. 3 spot in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament at Navy.

Colgate never trailed in the contest as it improves to 9-4 overall and finishes second in the Patriot League at 5-1. Bucknell falls to 11-3 overall and 4-2 for third in the conference standings.

Colgate freshman Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.) added two goals and sophomore Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists. Sophomores Nick Monastero (Bohemia, N.Y.) and Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage, N.Y.) both added a goal and an assist. Perry Menzies led the Bison with three goals, while Austin Winter had a pair of scores.

Both squads struggled to get their offenses going in the early parts of the first quarter. Murphy got things started for the Raiders at the 7:17 mark with a rifle from 10 yards out. Junior Jon Freeberg (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) provided the assist. Hurley made it 2-0 24 seconds later with an unassisted tally. Bucknell responded with two unanswered scores over the next 1:04, but Colleluori made it 3-2 at the end of the quarter when Corp threaded the needle to find the second-year attackman right on the doorstep.

The Raiders took control in the second quarter, taking a 7-4 lead into halftime. Monastero fired home a man-up goal at the 10:10 mark and Murphy made it 5-2 three minutes later. Bucknell’s Winter stopped Colgate’s three-goal run with 5:41 left on the clock, but the Raiders rattled off two of the quarters’ final three tallies for 7-4 advantage at the half.

The defense tightened up in the second half as the two teams combined for just five goals. John Togneri pulled Bucknell within two, 7-5, with 5:58 on the clock in the third quarter. Hurley came up big with under a minute left in the quarter, beating Nick Sciubba for an 8-5 lead to start the fourth quarter.

The Bison held off the Raiders for the majority of the fourth quarter, but were unable to get their offense going. Zander Crawford snuck one by freshman Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) with five minutes left to play, but Colgate did not break as Hurley sealed the win with an empty-net score as the Bison sent Sciubba out to play defense at the 1:57 mark. Bucknell got a few possessions in the final minute but were only able to capitalize once.

Senior Chris Eck (Fairfield, Conn.) was outstanding at the faceoff X, going 15-of-20 and picking up seven groundballs. The Raiders held a slight 31-28 advantage in shots and won the groundball battle 36-23. Colgate went 2-of-3 on man-up opportunities and did not allow a man-up goal.

In goal, Harrington was outstanding with 10 saves, including numerous point-blank stops. Sciubba was equally impressive, making 10 stops as well.
