|HAMILTON, NY Rookie Chris Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) got his Dartmouth career underway with a game-high four points to lead the Big Green men's lacrosse team to a 7-3 win over Colgate to kick off the 2010 season.|
Dartmouth (1-0) was led by Costabile, who posted two goals and two assists for four points, while senior captain Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) began his final season with three points on two goals and an assist. Senior captain Christopher Root (Houston, Texas) netted two goals in his first game of the year, both coming in the second half. Senior goaltender Michael Novosel (Somers, N.Y.) was solid in net with 14 saves to earn the win.
Colgate (0-2) got a goal and an assist from Patrick Campbell, while John Donnally and Michael Crown also added goals for the Raiders. Goaltender Tim Harrington made nine saves, but took the loss.
The first half was uneventful on the scoreboard for both teams. Dartmouth took the first lead of the game with 4:17 remaining in the opening quarter. Sussman netted his first of the season, coming unassisted to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Crown got Colgate even with Dartmouth early in the second quarter with his first of the season. The assist on the play was credited to Patrick Campbell to knot the score at 1-1.
With just under eight minutes left in the first half, Costabile fired home his first of his Dartmouth career to give the Big Green its second lead of the game at 2-1. Dartmouth had the shot advantage in the half with 17 shots to 11 for the Raiders. Turnovers hurt the Big Green as Dartmouth committed 10 in the first 30 minutes.
Dartmouth wasted no time increasing the lead to 3-1 in the third quarter. Root scored his first of the year coming just 1:22 into the second half. Sussman pushed the Big Green's advantage to 4-1 with his second of the game with the assist going to Costabile.
Freshman Nikki Dysenchuk (Darien, Conn.) scored the lone man-up goal for both teams in the third quarter for his first collegiate goal. The goal came with 2:11 left in the frame and the score came unassisted. Costabile continued his success at the end of the third with his second of the afternoon coming with 1:37 left, so Dartmouth went into the final quarter with a 6-1 lead. Sussman assisted on the play to give him three points.
The fourth quarter began with Root's second tally at the 10:34 mark to push the advantage up to 7-1. Colgate closed out the game with two goals in the final 3:25, but the rally fell short and the Big Green came away with the 7-3 and got head coach Andy Towers a win in his first game as Dartmouth's head man.
Colgate had the advantage in shots with 33 to the Big Green's 26. The Raiders dominated the play in the final frame, oushooting Dartmouth 15-1. Ground balls went to the Big Green, but by a slim 15-14 advantage. Both teams were successful clearing the ball out of their own zones. Dartmouth cleared 21-of-23, while Colgate missed being perfect by one with 18 clears in 19 chances.
Dartmouth will be back in action for its home opener on March 9 against Holy Cross at 3 p.m. at Scully-Fahey Field.
