Colgate vs. Hobart

The Game Story:
HAMILTON, N.Y.—The Colgate men's lacrosse team scored four straight goals to start the game and kept control from there as the Raiders defeated Hobart College 18-8 in a non-conference game played this afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium.

The Statesmen are now 1-2 overall, and Colgate improved to 4-1 this season.

Peter Baum led the Raider effort with a game-high nine points on six goals and three assists. Jeff Ledwick chipped in three goals and an assist. Ryan Walsh and Justin Kirchner each added three goals for Colgate. Robert Grabher scooped up a game-high nine ground balls.

Junior Reid Rosello and sophomore Cam Stone each scored two goals for Hobart. Rosello also tallied a game-high six caused turnovers and a team-high four ground balls. He set a new Hobart record for caused turnovers in a game. Sophomore Peter Zonino played all 60 minutes in in goal for Hobart and finished with 17 saves in his second collegiate start. Senior Bobby Dattilo won five of the first seven faceoffs before suffering a hard hit and sitting out the remainder of the game. Colgate won 15 of the next 21 restarts.

The Raiders came out strong in the first quarter jumping out to a 5-2 lead, scoring four straight goals to start the game. Ledwick logged an unassisted tally for Colgate's first goal, and Baum made a move around the net and fired for his first goal of the game with 8:38 to make it 2-0. After a Hobart turnover, Walsh drilled a shot into the back of the net to put the Raiders up by three. Baum notched his second of the day with 2:53 on the clock. Turnovers plagued the Statesmen as they committed 27 in the game, with 10 coming in the first quarter.

Just 47 seconds later, Hobart broke through with back-to-back goals late in the first. The Statesmen's first goal came with 2:06 remaining in the first when Stone tallied his second goal of the season to make it 4-1. Then junior Jake Silberlicht wound up and fired from the left side of the goal for his first this season, cutting the deficit to two with 1:11 remaining in the first. With just 5.3 seconds left in the first quarter, Baum found the back of the net for the third time to make it 5-3 just before the break.

The teams traded goals to start the second quarter. Just 1:01 in, first-year Taylor Vanderbeek fed classmate Zach Reed who fired from right in front of the goal for his first collegiate tally. Baum answered for the Raiders to make it 6-3. Senior Matt Campbell got Hobart within two again at 11:21 after a pass from junior Ryan Korn. However, Colgate answered with three straight goals to close out the half with a 9-5 lead.

The Raiders came out strong again in the second half scoring three straight goals to go up 12-4 just over four minutes in. With 10:17 on the clock, Rosello scored his first goal of the season on a hard overhand shot to make it 12-5. Back-to-back goals by Baum and Kirchner gave the Raiders a nine goal lead at 5:53 in the third.

With 3:34 left in the third, Stone tallied his second of the day, and Rosello found the back of the net with 1:18 on the clock to make it 14-7. Colgate continued to pour it on with a goal in the final seconds of the third and four more goals in the final quarter. Senior Sam Miller scored Hobart's lone goal in the fourth to extend his scoring streak to 27 games.

The Raiders held a 58-29 advantage in shots and a 44-32 lead in ground balls. Hobart was successful on 18 of 25 clear attempts and Colgate finished 17-20. Two of the Raiders goals came on man-up opportunities. Jared Madison played the opening 55:09 in goal for Colgate and made 10 saves. Conor Murphy came in for the final 4:51 and stopped two shots.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, March 10 when they travel to take on Bucknell
