|The Game Story:|
|HAMILTON, N.Y.- The Colgate University men's lacrosse team opened their
Patriot League season with a 13-6 victory over Lafayette Saturday at Tyler's
Field. Senior Joe Parker (Crofton, Md.) lead the Raiders with four goals and
two assists. Colgate improves to 4-3 while the Leopards drop to 1-5.
After even play in the first period and the score tied at 1-1, the Raiders
exploded with six goals in the second to the Leopards one. Much of the
Colgate offense shared in the rally with six different Raider goal scorers.|
Parker tallied a goal and an assist, while Jason Vasas (Fairport, N.Y.), Peter Watts (Wayland, Mass.), Chris Michaels (Pennington, N.J.), Scott Herbst (Short Hills, N.J.) and Matt Saxon (Bethesda, Md.) each contributed goals. Ian Franke (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied two assists, on Watts and Michaels goals while Jeff Vander Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) helped Saxon with his. Saxon's goal in the last minute of play in the second period would prove to be the game winner.
The lone Lafayette goal in the second was scored by Pat Lenon. Their first goal was tallied by Matt Prevost. The Leopards made a bit of a run early into the third period with goals by D.J. Krueger and Lennon but the Raiders scrambled to even the third period scoring with two goals in the last minute of play on goals by Parker and Michaels.
The final stanza went back and fourth, starting with a Colgate goal by Vander Meulen. The Leopards answered back with a goal from Ted Blackburn. Raider Michaels returned the favor with his third goal of the day. Lafayette closed out their scoring on the day with Blackburn's second goal. Colgate finished out the game with the fourth goals from both Parker and Michaels. The goalkeepers, CU's Chris Hettler (Liverpool, N.Y.) and LC's Mike Neary, kept the game even at 15 saves each.
The Raiders will hit the road to visit league opponent Hobart on April 3 but return home Saturday, April 6 to host PL foe Holy Cross. Face-off is set for 1:00.
