|The Game Story:|
|HAMILTON, N.Y. (03/28/2006)—Colgate University junior Brendan Hurley (West Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore Matt Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) registered four points apiece with two goals and two assists to lead the men’s lacrosse team to a convincing 14-5 win over visiting Marist College at Tyler’s Field. The Raiders scored six unanswered goals in the final 4:48 of the second quarter to secure the victory over the Red Foxes.|
Colgate improves to 6-2 overall, while Marist drops to 3-3 on the season. The Raiders are now 5-0 on their home turf this season and 9-1 in their past 10 games at home.
Twelve different Raiders got into the points column, including five different players with multiple-goal performances.
The first quarter was a low-scoring affair with the Red Foxes breaking through first at the 12:40 mark with a tally from Nick Hautau. Just under two minutes later Lalli faked a pass and beat Marist goaltender Ryan Penner to tie the score at the first intermission.
Rookie midfielder Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) put Colgate ahead for the first time 1:59 into the second frame, rifling a shot over the right shoulder of Penner. Marist’s Pete O’Hara evened the score three minutes later off an assist from Andrew Walsh.
That would be as close as the Red Foxes would get as the Raiders ripped off the next seven goals, including six in the final 4:48 of the second quarter. Senior Brian Robinson (Denver, Colo.) sparked the run with his team-best 13th goal of the year. Robinson finished with a pair of goals in the contest.
Less than a minute later, junior longstick defenseman John Dunn (Troy, Mich.) found a wide-open Jeff Hiller (Wantagh, N.Y.) with a pinpoint full-field pass from to make it a two-goal Colgate advantage with 3:54 left until halftime.
The Raiders added four more goals in a span of 1:28 to take an 8-2 lead into the break. Lalli and Corp both added their second scores of the game during the streak, while sophomore Chris Mulholland (Jenkintown, Pa.) and senior Mark Nemith (Albany, N.Y.) got on the board for the first time in the game.
Robinson capped off the 7-0 run four minutes into the third quarter to stretch the lead to 9-2.
The Red Foxes added three more goals, but could not climb their way back into the contest. Hautau led the way for Marist with two goals, while three other players all added scores in the game.
Sophomore Jon Freeburg (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) posted his first career goal, while sophomore Joshua Back (Guilderland, N.Y.) registered his first assist of the year.
Junior Chris Eck (Fairfield, Conn.) was outstanding at the “X” once again, winning 11-of-17 restarts for the Raiders. He also picked up a game-high six groundballs.
Senior goaltender Andrew Jarolimek (Silverthorne, Colo.) made six stops for Colgate in the win, while Penner and Terrence Dempsey combined for 13 saves.
Colgate outshot Marist 41-19 for the game and stifled the Red Foxes’ attack all evening. Marist was able to clear successfully just 11-of-19 times. The Raiders also won the groundball battle 38-19.
Colgate resumes its Patriot League schedule on Saturday, April 1 at Holy Cross. The game is scheduled to face off at 4 p.m. at Hart Field.
