The Game Story:
DENVER - The University of Denver men's lacrosse team (1-2) snagged its first win of the season, defeating the No. 20 Albany Great Danes (0-1) 17-13 in front of 811 fans at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Denver's offense stepped into high gear as two Pioneers finished the day with hat-tricks and seven others netted goals to give DU head coach Bill Tierney his first win in crimson and gold.

"This was a great way to regroup from our two losses last weekend," Tierney said. "Our offense has started to find its rhythm and you can really see our guys working together and understanding what we are asking of them. We are a young team but I think we proved a lot to ourselves today with this win."

Sophomore Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) and freshman Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) both scored three goals each for the Pioneers. Demopoulos also finished the day with three assists for a total of six points.

Also contributing for Denver with two goals apiece were junior Todd Baxter (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and sophomores Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario) and Patrick Rogers (Portland, Ore.), while seniors Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas), John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) and Cameron Kerr (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.), along with junior Emerson Eichler (New Vernon, N.J.) and freshman Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.), all dished in a goal apiece.

Charley Dickenson also finished with a season-high four assists, moving him into fourth all-time in the Pioneer record books for assists.

Coming off back-to-back 17-save performances a week ago against No. 1 Syracuse and Jacksonville, ECAC Co-Defender of the Week sophomore Zander Buteux (Madison, N.J.) made 11 saves to get his first win of the season. Senior Peter Lowell (Freeport, Maine) also made an appearance for the Pioneers tallying two saves.

With the scored tied 7-7 at the half, the Pioneers used an eight-goal barrage in the third quarter and two more goals in the fourth quarter to seal their first win of the season. The Great Danes made several attempts to answer, but were only able to score six goals in the final 30 minutes of action.

Derek Kreuzer, Dave Brock and Joe Pompo led the scoring duties for the Great Danes, scoring three goals each, while Joe Resetarits added two goals and one assist. Albany goalie John Carroll finished the day making 12 saves, stopping eight Pioneer shots in the first half.

As a team, Denver finished the day with 37 shots, held the advantage in ground balls 45 to 32 and converted on three of five man-up opportunities.

Next up, the Pioneers host the 9th Annual DU Face-Off Classic, welcoming Penn, Lehigh and Air Force for the two-day event at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
