The Game Story:
DENVER - Sophomore Greg Weigel (Port Republic, Md.) scored a career-high six goals to lead the University of Denver men's lacrosse team to a 16-9 win in its conference-opener against Fairfield on Thursday night, April 8, at Pioneer Field. In cold and rainy conditions, Denver extended its winning streak to three games and the victory boosts its record to 6-2 (1-0) on the season, while the Stags fall to 5-5 (1-1).

The weather conditions forced both teams to commit 10 turnovers apiece in the first quarter. The Pioneers were the first to score as sophomore Adam Miller (Columbus, Ohio) fed a pass to senior Andrew Huelskoetter (St. Louis, Mo.), who gave Denver its first tally of the evening with 3:31 remaining in the quarter. Junior Erik Swanson (Glenview, Ill.) scored his eighth goal of the season with 1:36 remaining to give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Pioneers opened up the second quarter with two quick goals. Junior Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) added an unassisted goal a little over three minutes into the quarter to extend Denver's lead to three. Just 13 seconds later, Miller recorded his second assist of the game off a feed to sophomore Adam Goodwin (Columbus, Ohio) who slipped it past Fairfield's Corey Gibbons to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead. Senior Jeff Biggs (St. Louis, Mo.) and Weigel combined to score Denver's fifth goal of the game with 6:58 remaining. Fairfield's Troy Bamann put the Stags on the board with 2:40 left and Mike Bocklet added a tally of his own to cut Denver's lead to three just a minute later. Weigel responded for the Pioneers and scored his second goal of the game to give Denver a 6-2 lead at the end of the half.

Denver's leading scorer Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) scored his 13th goal of the season to open the third quarter. Fairfield's Bamann responded with his second goal of the game just 25 seconds later to put the score at 7-3. Davidson took it upon himself to score his second goal of the game and extend the Pioneers lead to five with 12:47 remaining. The Stags' Tom Werney added a goal off a feed from Bocklet to put the score at 8-4. Weigel scored the next two goals for the Pioneers, giving Denver its biggest lead of the game, six goals. Fairfield's Rory McCarthy recorded his 16th goal of the season with 4:41 remaining, but Weigel struck again to leave the score at 11-5. Sophomore Geoff Snider (Calgary, Alberta) answered Bocklet's second goal of the game to keep Denver's lead at six and put the score at 12-6 to end the third quarter.

Just six seconds into the fourth quarter, Davidson won the first faceoff and scored his third goal of the game. In under a minute Weigel and Snider combined for two more goals to put the score at 15-6 with 14:02 remaining in the game. Goodwin tallied his second goal of the game to give Denver its biggest lead of the game, 10 points. Josh Thorton added a goal and Greg Downing added two in the last nine minutes, but it was not enough as Denver held on to clinch the 16-9 win.

Weigel led all scorers with six goals. Davidson added three and Goodwin tallied two for the Pioneers. Junior goalie Brian Sanders (Columbus, Ohio) was spectacular in goal, tallying 13 saves and facing 37 shots.

The Pioneers return to action this Sunday, April 11, when they host conference-foe Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
