April 12, 2003
The Game Story:
DENVER - The University of Denver men's lacrosse team (5-4) dismantled the Hobart Statesmen (5-5) by a margin of 15-8 today at Pioneer Field. For the first time this season, twelve different players netted goals for the Pioneers (Denver has recorded 11 different scorers twice), with sophomore Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) leading all scorers with two goals and two assists for four points. Senior Jeff Nunziato (Latham, N.Y.) excelled in between the pipes and recorded 19 saves off of Hobart's 27 shots on goal, including a second quarter where he steered aside 11 of the 12 Statesmen shots. Denver had no trouble managing the midfield as they successfully cleared 24 of their 28 attempts. With the win, the Pioneers climb above .500 for the first time since March 3rd, while Hobart falls to 5-5 overall.

Sophomore Erik Swanson (Glenview, Ill.) drew first blood for the Pioneers at 13:01 as he took advantage of a man-up situation and capitalized on tic-tac-toe passing in front of the net. Brown and junior Jeff Biggs (St, Louis, Mo.) brought the lead to 3-0 with goals at 6:29 and 5:23, respectively. Hobart finally broke Nunziato's shutout bid at 3:11 to end the period with a 3-1 Denver advantage.

The second outing belonged to the Pioneers. Freshman Adam Swain (West Simsbury, Conn.) kicked off a five-goal run at 14:49 when he fired in a shot from sophomore Greer Hanlon (Libertyville, Ill.) on a man-up attempt. The next 5:45 saw goals from sophomore Ben Dougherty (Glenwood, Md.), freshman Adam Miller (Columbus, Ohio), sophomore Blake Evans (New Canaan, Conn.) and Swanson to give the home team a 8-1 lead. As with the first quarter Hobart found life in the last minutes to set up a 8-2 second half.

The third quarter quickly developed into a defenseive struggle. At the 9:06 mark freshman Geoff Snider (Calgary, Alberta) bounced a low shot past the Statesmen netminder but Hobart quickly regrouped and slipped in shots at 8:56 and 8:13 to pull within five.

The Statesmen came out firing in the fourth and came within four for the first time since the second quarter with a goal at 11:53. Biggs took advantage of a lull in the Hobart defense at 9:06 and scored his second of the game on a quick pass from Miller. Denver closed out the win from there, outscoring the Statesmen 5-3 down the stretch. Sophomore Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.), Brown, junior Andrew Huelskoetter (St. Louis, Mo.), senior Mike Kenlay (Wilmette, Ill.) and junior Sean McDonagh (New Canaan, Conn.) each had goals in the span.

The Crimson and Gold will next play on Friday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. against Great Western Lacrosse League Foe Butler.
