The Game Story:
DENVER – The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team (2-3) narrowly defeated the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks (2-3) by a score of 8-7 in the final game of the DU Face-Off Classic, sponsored by UBS on Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium before a crowd of 1,172.

“It’s nice to get a win,” said head coach Bill Tierney. “Today I just wanted our team to come out hard, and I’m happy that we came out with the victory.”

Freshman Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) scored all three of his goals in the second quarter, bringing his scoring total to 12 on the season. Also contributing for Denver was sophomore Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.), who had two goals and an assist on the afternoon, while three other Pioneers added scores.

After Demopoulos opened the scoring with 11:30 on the clock during the first quarter, the Mountain Hawks responded with two scores to hold the advantage after one quarter of play.

But the Pioneers came back with five goals in the second quarter, three courtesy of Flint, to take a 6-2 cushion heading into the locker room. After allowing Lehigh 14 shots in the first period, the Pioneers’ defense clamped down, allowing the Mountain Hawks only one shot at the net in the second quarter.

Lehigh slowly reduced the Pioneer lead during the second half, outscoring Denver 3-0 in the fourth quarter, but Denver held on for the 8-7 victory.

Despite a 30-shot barrage from the Mountain Hawks, sophomore goalie Zander Buteux (Madison, N.J.) made nine saves to ensure the Pioneer victory.

Earlier in the day, Penn defeated Air Force 8-7 in the third game of the DU Face-Off Classic. John Conneely and Rob McMullen led the Quakers with two goals each, while Corey Winkoff added three assists. With the win, Penn improves to 2-2 on the season. Zack Carroll led the Falcons with three goals, but Air Force dropped their third straight decision to fall to 0-3 overall.

Denver returns to action when they host Canisius next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
