The Game Story:
DENVER - Junior Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) scored his second hat trick of the season but it was not enough as the University of Denver men's lacrosse team could not break through North Carolina's defense and fell to the Tar Heels, 11-6, on Tuesday, March 9, at Pioneer Field. The loss snaps the Pioneers' three-game winning streak and marks their first loss of the year, as their record falls to 3-1, while North Carolina improves to 2-1.

UNC struck first as Scott Falatach fed a pass to Mike McCall, who stuffed it past junior goalie Brian Sanders (Columbus, Ohio) to give the Tar Heels the early lead. Just over a minute later, UNC's Ryan Blair took the ball and wrapped it around the goal to leave the Tar Heels leading 2-0 heading into the second quarter.

McCall and Blair paired off again for UNC as McCall scored his fifth goal of the season. The Tar Heels received two more from Dave Duffy and Johnny Seivold to give them a 5-0 advantage with 14 seconds remaining in the half. Davidson took it upon himself to win the next faceoff and score Denver's first goal of the game with nine seconds remaining in the half, to put the score at 5-1 heading into the third quarter.

Falatach extended UNC's lead to five with his second goal of the game, just 52 minutes into the third quarter. The Tar Heel's Dan Stringer added a goal of his own to leave the score at 7-1 with 9:15 remaining in the third. Davidson recorded his second unassisted goal of the game and seventh of the season as he cut UNC's lead to five again with 6:05 remaining. A penalty on Matt Pessagno allowed the Pioneers to capitalize on a man-up advantage as junior Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) scored Denver's third goal of the game to put the score at 7-3. UNC's Jed Prossner answered with a goal of his own, followed up by a man-up goal by McCall to leave the Pioneers trailing 9-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tar Heels broke through Denver's defense again and Blair scored his second goal of the game 1:40 into the fourth quarter. Sophomore Greg Weigel (Port Republic, Md.) answered with goal off a an assist freshman Ryan Zordani (Littleton, Colo.) to have the score at 10-4 with 9:14 remaining in the game. UNC's Prossner answered the goal and put the game out of reach. Final goals from Davidson and senior Jeff Biggs (St. Louis, Mo.) with under two minutes to play, put the score at 11-6 to end the game.

Davidson finished with three goals to extend his season total to eight. Brown, Weigel and Biggs each added one in the loss. Sanders made 13 saves and faced 36 shots. Four Tar Heels added two goals a piece and goalie Paul Spellman made 14 saves and faced 36 shots.
