|The Game Story:|
|DENVER - Junior Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) scored five goals but it was
not enough as the University of Denver men's lacrosse team lost its first
conference game of the season to Notre Dame, 14-12, on Sunday, April 11,
at Pioneer Field. The Fighting Irish's Patrick Walsh scored four goals
and added three assists in a hard fought battle, where the score was tied
four times and there were three lead changes. The loss snaps Denver's
three-game winning streak and moves their record to 6-3 (1-1) on the
season, while the Irish improve to 5-4 (2-1).
After recording a game-high six goals against Fairfield, sophomore Greg Weigel (Port Republic, Md.) opened the game with a goal to give the Pioneers an early lead. The Irish's Patrick Walsh, Brian Giordano and Drew Peters responded with three unanswered goals with 5:42 remaining to give Notre Dame a 3-1 lead. A penalty on Chris Jarvis led to an extra-man goal by junior Erik Swanson (Glenview, Ill.) for the Pioneers and left Denver trailing by one. With 10 seconds remaining in the quarter, Notre Dame's Chris Richez added another tally to put the score at 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
A little over four minutes into the second quarter, sophomore Adam Miller (Columbus, Ohio) capitalized on a turnover by Notre Dame's D.J. Driscoll and scored his seventh goal of the season to leave Denver again trailing by one. Just 36 seconds later, senior Jeff Biggs (St. Louis, Mo.) sent a pass to Brown who tied the game at 4-4. With 8:49 remaining in the half, Brown scored his second goal of the game to give Denver its second lead of the game. Freshman Ryan Zordani (Littleton, Colo.) tallied his second career-goal with 5:45 left in the half to increase Denver's lead to two. Notre Dame's Matt Malakoff added a goal but Brown completed his hat trick to give the Pioneers a 7-5 advantage. Walsh claimed his second goal of the game to give Notre Dame a 7-6 lead at the half.
To begin the third quarter, Denver's Brown tallied his fourth goal of the game off a feed from Miller to leave Notre Dame trailing 8-6. Swanson notched his second goal of the game but the Irish's Dan Berger and Giordano each tallied a goal to cut Denver's lead to one with 3:35 remaining in the quarter. Walsh completed his hat trick for Notre Dame with 1:30 remaining and a goal by Matt Karweck gave the Irish a 10-9 lead heading into the final quarter.
Sophomore Geoff Snider (Calgary, Alberta) tied the score for Denver at 10-10 with 10:46 left in the game. Notre Dame was relentless as Frank Matarazzo took the ball off the faceoff and scored five seconds later to regain the lead for the Irish and put the score at 11-10. Giordano completed his three-goal game and Walsh scored another goal as Notre Dame sealed the win by extending its lead to three with 8:18 remaining in the game. Brown and sophomore Adam Goodwin (Columbus, Ohio) each added goals in the last four minutes of the game, left but Notre Dame held on for the 14-12 win.
Walsh led all scorers with four goals and three assists. Brown added five goals for the Pioneers and Swanson tallied two on the day. Junior goalie Brian Sanders (Columbus, Ohio) tallied a season-high 18 saves in the loss, while facing 27 shots.
The Pioneers continue conference play next Saturday, April 17, when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force at 1 p.m. MT.
