The Game Story:
DENVER - Penn State's Will Cutler scored six goals, including the game winner, to lift the Penn State Nittany Lions over the No. 12 Denver lacrosse team, 11-10, on Sunday, March 21, at Pioneer Field. The loss marks the Pioneers second of the year, as their record falls to 3-2, while PSU improves to 3-3.

The Pioneers were the first to score as junior Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) fed a pass to junior Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) from behind the net, to give Denver an early 1-0 lead. PSU's Will Cutler answered with his own unassisted goal to tie the score at 1-1, with 6:58 remaining in the first quarter. Neither team capitalized on man-up opportunities and 16 turnovers between the teams kept the score at 1-1 heading into the second quarter.

Just five seconds into the second quarter, Davidson won the first faceoff and took the ball down the field to score his ninth goal of the season and put the Pioneers up 2-1. Only two minutes later, Davidson sent a pass to sophomore Adam Miller (Columbus, Ohio), who took a quick shot in front of the goal to extend Denver's lead to two, with 13:28 remaining. The Nittany Lions' Nate Whitaker, who led the team in scoring prior to today's game, tallied his sixth goal of the season as he cut Denver's lead to one, with 10:33 left in the second quarter. Just a minute later, junior Erik Swanson (Glenview, Ill.) wrapped the ball around the net and once again extended Denver's lead to two. With 7:01 remaining in the half, Cutler scored his second goal of the game to put the score at 4-3. The duo struck again with 2:10 remaining to tie the game at 4-4, heading into the third quarter.

PSU's John Eremus scored the team's first man-up goal, just 37 seconds into the third period to take its first lead of the game, 5-4. Cutler scored his fourth goal of the game just two minutes later to extend the Nittany Lions' lead to two. Sophomore Greg Weigel (Port Republic, Md.) added a goal of his own to cut PSU's lead to one with 10:16 remaining in the third. PSU continued to push on offense as Greg Hale and Cutler each added another tally to put the Nittany Lions up 8-5. The Pioneers rallied as Swanson scored his second goal of the game to cut PSU's lead to two, with 52 seconds remaining in the third. The score remained 8-6, heading into the final quarter.

PSU managed to kill a three-minute penalty at the beginning of the third period and was the first to score as Derek Howells gave the Nittany Lions a three-goal lead. Juniors Greer Hanlon (Libertyville, Ill.) and Brown each added a goal for the Pioneers to put the score at 9-8, with 4:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. Goals from Davidson and Hanlon with 1:37 left in the game, tied the score at 10-10. With 23 second left, Cutler scored his sixth goal of the season and sealed the 11-10 win for the Nittany Lions.

Cutler led all scorers with six goals. The Pioneers received two goals apiece from Swanson, Davidson, Hanlon and Weigel. Swanson also added a game-high three assists. Junior goalie Brian Sanders (Columbus, Ohio) make 10 saves and faced 37 shots, while PSU's Mike Stoltz made 15 saves and faced 39 shots.
