Denver vs. Vermont

The Game Story:
DENVER - Eleven different Pioneers scored in the University of Denver men's lacrosse 15-3 win over Vermont, in the season home-opener at the fourth-annual Face-Off Classic. Junior Matt Brown (Guilford, Conn.) recorded his first hat trick of the season and senior Andrew Huelskoetter (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Adam Miller (Columbus) each tallied four points to lead the Pioneers and bring Denver's record to 1-0 on the season. Vermont falls to 0-1.

Denver looked to make an impact early, with Miller initiating a quick 2-0 run in the first minute of play. Miller's goal was assisted by junior Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.), who added his own goal just 33 seconds later. Denver received goals from senior Jeff Biggs (St. Louis, Mo.), freshman Drew Sherman (Dublin, Ohio) and sophomore Geoff Snider (Calgary, Alberta). Huelskoetter added two assists to give the Pioneers a 5-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Pioneers attacked just 44 seconds in the second quarter, as Brown scored Denver's first power-play goal of the game. Freshman Brandon Barcus (Dublin, Ohio) added a second off another assist from Huelskoetter. Junior Ben Dougherty (Glenwood, Md.), sophomore Adam Swain (West Simsbury, Conn.), junior Erik Swanson (Glenview, Ill.) and Brown each tallied a goal to put the Pioneers up 11-0 at the half.

In a rain-soaked third quarter, Denver again attacked offensively. Brown completed his hat trick just four seconds into the stanza. Freshmen Barcus and Sherman each tallied their second goal of the game to extend Denver's lead to 13 after Vermont's Adam Kornuth scored the Catamounts first goal of game with 8:45 remaining in the third quarter. The Catamounts' Austin Humphries made the last goal of the quarter to leave the Pioneers leading 14-2.

Vermont's Kornuth added his second goal with 8:11 remaining in the game, but Huelskoetter answered with a goal of his own off an assist from Miller. Denver's defense remained strong as the Pioneers sealed the 15-3 victory.

Junior goalie Brian Sanders (Columbus, Ohio) made second-career start, making four saves and facing 20 shots in the game. His record now stands at 1-0. Freshman goalie Jeb Hollingsworth (Darien, Conn.) saw action in the game, making two saves and allowing one goal.

Air Force stunned No. 1 Virginia in the first game of the tournament, 7-6. William Ameister recorded three points on two goals and one assist in the win. Matt Ward scored three goals for the Cavaliers.

The Pioneers will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 29 at 1:30 p.m., when they host No. 1 Virginia. Air Force and Vermont will square off at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Field.
