Denver vs. Vermont

The Game Story:
The University of Denver men's lacrosse team dropped its second game in a week, losing a seesaw match to Vermont, 9-8, Saturday afternoon at Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The two teams combined for five lead changes and four ties but Vermont scored last for the win.

The two teams had virtually identical stats during the 60 minutes of play, with DU holding the edge in shots, 32 to 27, ground balls, 24 to 22, and clears, 18 to 17. Vermont committed one more turnover then DU's 28. The teams split the face-offs with 10 each. DU took advantage of the man-up situations, converting 2-of-4, while UVM went 0-for-5.

Vermont (3-2) started the scoring off when Alex Young scored his fifth goal of the season at 13:52 and his second goal of the game at 4:14. Teammates Dan Zwirko and Sean Layton followed his lead both scoring goals before the end of the first period. Denver answered at 3:32 in the first quarter when Brandon Barcus (Dublin, Ohio) buried a pass from David Hahn (Aurora, Colo.) deep into the net of the Catamounts. Fellow Pioneers Ryan Zordani (Littleton, Colo.) and Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) also scored in the last four minutes, leaving Denver one goal short at the end of the first period, 4-3.

Denver (4-4) and Vermont exchanged goals to begin the second period, with Vermont's Pete Hein scoring first at 12:28 followed by Denver's John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) taking advantage if a man-up situation at 10:24. Paulson then tied up the game with less than nine minutes left in the second period on a pass from Kyle Widerstedt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.). The Pioneers took the lead for the first time in the game with a goal scored by Brad Richardson (Langley, B.C.) on a pass from Joey Murray (Denver), his second assist of the game. The Pioneers led 6-5 at halftime.

The Catamounts scored the first goal of the third period at 9:30 when Layton took the ball in by himself to score. Denver regained their lead with Barcus' goal at 8:42. Hein scored his second goal of the game at 5:05, tying the score at seven apiece. Zordani answered at 3:47 when he pounded in a pass from Ryan Shaughnessy (Columbus, Ohio) to give the Pioneers the lead at the close of the third period 8-7.

Layton struck again to begin the fourth period with his third goal of the game, tying the score at eight. With three minutes left in the game, Young gave the Catamounts the lead with his hat trick goal. The Pioneers couldn't capitalize on their last two chances in the final minutes of the game and Vermont won 9-8.

UVM goalie Daryl Swartz held the Pioneers scoreless in the final quarter of the game, recording six of his 10 saves in the final 15 minutes of play. DU goalie Jeb Hollingsworth (Darien, Conn.) had nine saves in the game.

The Pioneers head to New Haven, Conn., on Saturday, March 24 to face Quinnipiac at 12 p.m. MT/2 p.m. ET.
