Drexel vs. Albany
February 26, 2011
The Game Story:
Philadelphia, Pa. - Robert Church had three goals and three assists and goalkeeper Mark Manos made 14 saves as Drexel downed UAlbany, 14-7, in the Great Danes' season opener on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Vidas Field. The Dragons are ranked No. 20 in the USILA coaches' poll and No. 18 by Nike/Inside Lacrosse.
UAlbany (0-1) leaped to a 4-1 advantage in the opening 10-plus minutes of play. Joe Resetarits, who missed all but five games last year due to a foot injury and had three goals and one assist, scored twice. Brian Caufield went one-on-one with a defender and hit the top left corner. Freshman Ty Thompson later found the net off a rebound.
Drexel (1-1) responded with six unanswered goals to go ahead. Nick Trizano drew his team even at four apiece after the visitors failed to clear the ball. Kris Franklin's low, sidearm shot from the left point put the Dragons in front. Trizano ended the decisive run when he moved from behind to the right side of the crease for a 7-4 lead.
The Dragons, who opened with a three-goal loss to second-ranked Virginia six days ago, held UAlbany off the scoreboard in the third quarter. Manos, the Colonial Athletic Association's top defensive player and a third-team All-America selection as a sophomore, was brilliant in the period. He stopped freshman Miles Thompson twice and thwarted Resetarits' extra-man attempt.
Meanwhile, Church had a hand in four consecutive goals that swelled the margin to 13-5 early in the fourth quarter. The sophomore attacker scored in transition, tallied an extra-man goal from the top of the box and converted Scott Perri's feed with 12:36 remaining. The Dragons dominated in the face-off circle where they won 18 of 23 draws.
Drexel's Chris Farquhar had two goals and one assist, while Kyle Bergman added a pair. Thompson finished with two goals and one assist for the Great Danes, who fell in their opener for the fourth consecutive year.
