Drexel vs. Villanova

The Game Story:
Philadelphia, Pa. - Villanova scored two extra-man goals in the fourth quarter and defeated Drexel, 8-5, at Drexel Field this afternoon. Drexel (7-2, 0-1) rallied from a 5-2 deficit to cut the lead to one at the end of the third quarter, but the Wildcats (5-2, 1-0) scored the next three goals in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Dragons.

Drexel got on the board first when Jesse Rumble scored just 39 seconds into the game. Yoni Cohen recorded an assist on that goal. Villanova answered with the next four goals. Matt Panneton started the scoring at 13:05 and one minute later, Mike Haas scored on the man up. Dan Fanelli and Brendan O'Donnell also scored during that stretch.

Rumble scored his second goal of the game after taking a feed from Matt Musci with 4:44 remaining in the half to make the score 4-2. It appeared that would be the score heading to the break, but Villanova's Marc Creegan took a pass from Chris Kramer and scored with just one second remaining in the half to make it 5-2.

Drexel scored the only two goals of the third quarter to cut the lead to 5-4. Sean Moloney scored an extra-man goal from Matt Musci at 3:09 and Jeff Pfeffer tallied his 14th goal of the year with 43 seconds left. Drexel appeared to have the momentum heading into the fourth quarter, but Fanelli scored his second goal of the game to give the Wildcats a two-goal lead with just under 11 minutes remaining. The ‘Cats added an even-strength goal by Eric Webber and an extra-man goal by Matt Starker to up the lead to 8-4. Drexel's Chris O'Connor scored in the final minute to make the final 8-5.

Joe Canuso made 13 saves for the Wildcats, nine of which came in the second half. Bryan Maggio turned aside eight shots for Drexel. Drexel concludes its two-game homestand on Saturday at Drexel Field when they face No. 14 Towson at 1 p.m.
