| FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team opened the 2003 season with a
14-3 win over The College of the Holy Cross, on a wet and cold Saturday afternoon game at
University Field.
Rain fell throughout, but it did not put a damper on the Stag (1-0, 0-0 GWLL) offense, which scored the first 10 goals of the game. Fairfield received five goals from senior Matt Buecker (Street, Md./North Hartford), to lead the Stag offense on the afternoon. He also added an assist, and took six shots on the afternoon. Sophomore AJ Califano (Suffern, NY/Suffern) chipped in with four goals and two assists, while junior Rory McCarthy (Camillus, NY/West Genessee) and senior John Kusak (Rochester, NY/Brighton) each had two goals for the Stags. Holy Cross (0-1, 0-0 Patriot League) received single goals from Billy Klotz, Dan Fink, and Joe Stefans. Fairfield senior goalie CJ Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) had nine saves on the afternoon for Fairfield. Kemp was relieved in the fourth quarter by sophomore Corey Gibbons (North Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale). Gibbons had three saves. Fairfield returns to action on March 1, as it begins a three game road trip at Penn State University. The Stags will then travel to Brown and Syracuse, before returning home to face Harvard on March 15. |
