Fairfield vs. Notre Dame

The Game Story:
FAIRFIELD, Conn. ^ Travis Wells led all scorers with three goals and an assist as the No. 19 Fighting Irish of Notre defeated the Fairfield University men^s lacrosse team 14-4 today on Lessing Field. The loss, Fairfield^s first at home this season, drops the Stags to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the Great Western Lacrosse League, while the win improves the Irish to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the GWLL.

Notre Dame wasted no time getting on the board this afternoon as Matt Karweck, Brian Giordano, Owen Mulford, and Steve Clagett combined to score the first four goals of the game. AJ Califano put Fairfield on the board when he finished Matt Buecker^s dish with just eight seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Irish however continued to pour on the attack and ran off another four straight goals in the second quarter. Kyle Frigon and Matt Ryan each had one while Wells notched two in the run. At 3:17 Peter Vlahakis scored an unassisted goal for he Stags to make it 8-2, but Notre Dame answered with six more unanswered goals through the third and fourth quarters to put the game out of reach.

Junior Rory McCarthy would score Fairfield^s third goal off an assist by Matt Baglio, and Matt Buecker notched the Stags final goal without an assist.

Fairfield senior captain CJ Kemp gave another valiant effort recording 16 saves before being relieved with 11:30 left in the fourth quarter by Cory Gibbons who tallied three stops. Stewart Crosland had four saves before being relieved with 13:10 to go in the fourth by Nick Antol who had a pair of stops.

The Stags will finish the 2003 regular season next Saturday when they host the University of Denver on Lessing Field for a 7 pm start.
