The Game Story:
The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team captured its ECAC opener with a 5-4 victory over Rutgers University this afternoon at Alumni Stadium. Freshman John Snellman (Norwalk, Conn.) paced the Stags (2-1, 1-0 ECAC) with a pair of goals while classmate Brent Adams (Norwalk, Conn.) tallied a goal and two assists.

The Scarlet Knights (1-4, 0-1 ECAC) opened the scoring at the 8:48 mark in the first quarter as Hunter Burnard connected with Kory Kelly. With 27 seconds to play in the period, Kelly found Kevin Hover to give Rutgers the 2-0 lead.

Fairfield responded in the second quarter with four unanswered goals to open up the 4-2 lead. Snellman started the Fairfield run at 12:53 stuffing home a pass from senior Chris Ajemian (Duxbury, Mass.). At 7:01, Adams found a slashing Chris Trombino (Huntington, N.Y.) for Trombino's first tally of the year. Less than three minutes later, Adams scored to put the Stags on top 3-2. Adams then connected with Snellman with 1:01 left to play to give Fairfield the two-goal advantage heading into the break.

In the third quarter, Steven Watson pulled Rutgers within 4-3 with a goal at 10:14. The Stags, making use of their man-advantage, got the goal back at 6:59 as Logan Rausse (Arnold, Md.) found the back of the cage off the feed from Max Trunz (Upper Brookville, N.Y.).

With the Scarlet Knights trailing 5-3 with 6:48 left to play in the game, Kelly posted his second goal to cut Fairfield's lead to one. Rutgers battled down the stretch and appeared to the tie game with 47 second left, but the goal was waved off after Collin Donahue stepped in the crease on the shot. The Stags were able to clear into the offensive zone and hang on for the victory.

Rookie Charlie Cipriano (Willston Park, N.Y.) earned the win after posting seven saves. For Rutgers, Peter Pantages and Billy Olin combined for 12 saves on the day.

Fairfield is back in action on March 14 as it hosts Colgate at 3 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
