Fairfield vs. Saint John's

The Game Story:
Wednesday, March 2, 2005, Fairfield, CT - The St. John's University men's lacrosse team fell to Fairfield 17-5 in a non-conference game at Alumni Field in Fairfield, CT. St. John's drops to 1-1, while Fairfield improves to 2-0.

The Red Storm was led by Patrick Zeis with two goals, one assist, captain Mike McGuire with two goals and Justin O'Donnell with one goal, one assist. Goalie Matthew Duca recorded 11 saves for St. John's.

Fairfield came out strong maintaining possession of the ball for the majority of the first quarter, scoring several unanswered goals. After falling 6-0, Devin Madden picked up a ground ball and passed to Zeis, who scored the first goal of the game for St. John's with 27 seconds left to end the quarter.

In the second quarter, goalie Matt Duca shut out the stags with five saves before Chris Manley put one away in the middle of the net to put Fairfield up 8-1. The Red Storm answered back with a goal by O'Donnell from Zeis at 4:13 to cut the lead to six, but the Stags scored one more goal with four seconds left to end the quarter, 10-2.

Freshman Matt Castele from Fairfield opened the third quarter with a goal from Travis Nelsen at 12:50. Fairfield scored three more goals during the period, putting them up 13-2 over the Red Storm.

Zeis opened up the fourth quarter for St. John's going one on one with Fairfield goalie Jeff Cilente, scoring his second goal of the day at 14.31. On two man-up opportunities, McGuire scored above the crease at 13:22 and 8:36 to bring the score to 14-5, but was not enough as Fairfield scored three more goals to end the game, 17-5.

The Red Storm returns to action this Saturday, March 5, when they will host Georgetown in its first ECAC game of the season. Face off is set for 1 p.m. at DaSilva Memorial Field.
