The Game Story:
WASHINGTON, DC -- Sophomore attack Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led seventh-ranked Georgetown University to a 10-8 victory over #22 Ohio State in men's lacrosse action on Saturday, February 23, before a crowd of 1,640 on Harbin Field. Goldman tallied a hat trick and added an assist to give the Hoyas a season-opening victory to improve to 1-0, while the Buckeyes fall to 0-2 on the year. Junior midfielder Curtis Smith led Ohio State in scoring with four goals and four assists.

The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard first when Anthony Gilardi scored off a feed from Smith to take a 1-0 lead with 9:44 on the clock. Goldman responded by reeling off back-to-back goals at 8:28 and 7:04 to give the Hoyas a 2-1 edge. Junior attacker Mike Hammer (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) picked up the assist on Goldman's first goal and sophomore midfielder Mike Boynton (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was credited with the assist on the second. The two squads then traded goals to close out the quarter. Ohio State's Smith tied the game at 2-2 with 6:37 on the clock, but Goldman struck for his third tally of the day just 42 seconds later to put the Hoyas up 3-2.

Ohio State took control of the second quarter, outscoring Georgetown 3-1. Smith recorded his second goal of the afternoon, with Mike Norton assisting, at 13:31 to tie the game for the third time. However, senior midfield Steve Dusseau (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) set up sophomore midfielder Walid Hajj (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) two minutes later to give the Hoyas a 4-3 advantage. Tom Randisi knotted the score at 4-4 off a Smith assist with 9:54 to go in the second stanza. Then, at 5:43 the Buckeyes' Gilardi took advantage of GU's two-man down situation to give Ohio State a one-point lead at 5-4.

Georgetown struck first in the third quarter when Hajj notched his second goal of the day to tie the contest (5-5) at 14:07, but Ohio State bounced back with two consecutive goals to take a 7-5 lead. The first goal came from sophomore midfielder Shaun Lyons at 9:55 with Smith assisting, and the second from Smith at 2:13 with Gilardi picking up the assist. The Hoyas closed out the third quarter with two goals to knot the score at 7-7. Senior midfielder Phil Vincenti (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) found the back of the net at 1:38 off a Goldman feed, then Dusseau stepped up with an unassisted goal with just 14 seconds remaining.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Hoyas as they controlled the tempo of the game. Dusseau slipped past a defender to score and give Georgetown a one-point lead, 8-7, just 35 seconds into the quarter. Junior defender Kyle Sweeney (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) made it 9-7 in favor of the Hoyas at 14:06, while sophomore attack Kevin Shooshan (Potomac, Md./Landon) earned the assist on the play. Junior attack Mike Hammer (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) notched the last Hoya goal with 3:41 left in the game to make the score 10-7. The Buckeyes' Smith closed out the scoring for the day with just 30 seconds remaining off an assist from Mike Norton.

GU goalkeeper Scott Schroeder (Summit, N.J./Summit) made 14 saves on the day, as did Ohio State's Tony Russo. The Hoyas outshot the Buckeyes 47-31 and held a 44-30 advantage on groundballs. Ohio State held a 12-11 edge on face-offs.

The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, March 2, when they travel to Baltimore, Md., to face #15 Cornell at 4:00 p.m. at Johns Hopkins University.
