Hobart vs. Colgate
April 3, 2002
The Game Story:
GENEVA, N.Y.^◊The Hobart College lacrosse team fought off a pesky Colgate squad and Mother Nature to earn a 14-10 Patriot League victory this evening in the first night game ever played on the Colleges^“ campus. First-year attackman Nate Hill (Hamburg/Hamburg, N.Y.) led all scorers with seven points on two goals and five assists.

For the second time in as many games, the Statesmen (5-3, 4-1 PL) faced off with the first place team in the Patriot League (Hobart beat Bucknell, 12-11, on Saturday). The Raiders (4-4, 1-1 PL) seemed undaunted by the snow flakes that fell throughout the game, building a 2-1 lead five minutes into the game on a pair of tallies by junior midfielder Nick Gerken (Wilton, Conn.).

The Statesmen answered with six straight goals, the first three set up by Hill, to take a comfortable 7-2 lead into halftime. Both his assists and points totals are the highest by a Statesmen this season.

^”[Nate Hill] is the kind of guy that plays hard every day in practice, so when he gets in those situations in a game he makes plays,^‘ Hobart Head Coach Matt Kerwick said.

Colgate erased Hobart^“s 6-0 run in the third quarter with an inspired effort in the third quarter. The Raiders scored the first four goals after the break on back-to-back efforts by sophomore Chris Michaels (Pennington, N.J.) and then junior Peter Watts (Wayland, Mass.). Michaels finished with two goals and an assist.

The Statesmen responded with goals from junior attackman John Bogosian (Kent School/Massena, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Sean Kent (La Salle/Lower Gwynedd, Pa.).

Colgate rallied for three more goals, the last two by senior midfielder Joe Parker (Crofton, Md.) to tied the game at 9-all with 13:31 left to play. Parker finished with a team best two goals and two assists.

The teams traded goals to 10-all and stayed that way until the Raiders were penalized for an illegal body check with 4:44 remaining. Senior midfielder David Spratlen (Colorado Academy/Littleton, Colo.) converted the extra-man opportunity to give Hobart a one-goal lead at the 4:21 mark.

The Statesmen added three more insurance goals, the last two by Hill in the final minute, to give Hobart its 20th consecutive win over Colgate.

Junior Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) earned the win in goal with 10 saves, while senior Chris Hettler (Liverpool, N.Y.) also stopped 10 shots for the Raiders.

Hobart returns to action on April 6, when it entertains Penn State. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., on Boswell Field. Weather may dictate moving the game to artificial turf, which would also require a later start time. A press release will be issued as soon as possible once a venue and start time have been determined.
