Hofstra vs. Delaware

The Game Story:
Hempstead, NY - The 19th-ranked Hofstra Pride Men's Lacrosse team returns to action and begins its 2012 Colonial Athletic Association schedule this Saturday, March 17 when the Pride host the 20th-ranked Blue Hens of the University of Delaware. Game time at James M. Shuart Stadium is 1 p.m.

The Pride, 2-3 on the season, are coming off a 6-5 overtime loss to then-seventh-ranked Notre Dame last Saturday. Hofstra battled back from a 3-1 deficit to take a 4-3 lead. Notre Dame rallied in the final 1:12 to take a 5-4 lead with 12 seconds to play. But on the ensuing face-off, Pride junior John Antoniades started a play that would see the ball go to junior Adiran Sorichetti and then in the middle of the box to sophomore Torin Varn for the game-tying goal with 3.9 seconds remaining in regulation. Unfortunately for the Pride, Notre Dame's Sean Rogers scored his third goal of the game 1:19 into the overtime to give the Irish the win.

Hofstra, which averages 7.60 goals per game and allows 8.60 goals per contest, has wins over Sacred Heart (11-9) and Harvard (7-6) and losses to Princeton (12-6), Fairfield (10-9 in 3OT) and Notre Dame (6-5 in OT). The Pride are led in scoring by sophomore Lance Yapor with 12 goals and one assists after his three-goal game against Notre Dame. Junior Adrian Sorichetti has added seven goals and three assists while classmate Ian Braddish has chipped in with five goals and four assists. Antoniades has picked up a team-high 17 ground balls while winning 43 of 85 face-offs for a .506 winning percentage. Senior Andrew Gvozden has an 8.29 goals against average and a .561 save percentage. The Delaware contest starts Hofstra's second three-game in eight-day stretch that will see the Pride host St. John's on March 20 before traveling to Drexel on March 24.

Saturday's game is the 36th meeting between Hofstra and Delaware in a series that started in 1951. Hofstra holds a 23-12 series lead over the Blue Hens. While the Pride has defeated the Blue Hens in 11 of the last 16 meetings, the Delaware downed Hofstra twice in 2011. UD topped the Pride, 7-6, on March 19 at Delaware Stadium and 10-9 at Shuart Stadium on May 4 in the CAA semifinals.

The Blue Hens of Delaware enter the week with a 3-4 record with wins over Detroit (19-6), Bucknell (11-10 in OT) and Villanova (13-9). Their losses have come against Loyola (13-8), Johns Hopkins (8-6), Mt. St. Mary's (12-10) and Stony Brook (7-6). After winning their first two games of the season, Delaware has won once in the last five outings.

The Blue Hens, who average10.43 goals per game and allow 9.29 per outing, are led in scoring by senior attackman Grant Kaleikau, who has scored 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points. He ranks fifth in assists and sixth in points in Division I. Sophomore Danny Keane has added 12 goals and three assists while junior Sean Finegan has posted nine goals. Senior Dan Cooney leads the team with 50 ground balls while winning 89 of 143 face-offs for a .622 winning percentage. Freshman goalie Chris Herbert has a 9.48 goals against average and a .508 save percentage in seven contests this year.
