Holy Cross vs. Providence
April 10, 2003
The Game Story:
ORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman attack Billy Klotz (Derry, N.H.) powered four goals to propel the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team to a 10-6 victory over visiting Providence, Thursday, April 10 at the Hart Center Astroturf. The Crusaders earned their first victory of 2003, improving to 1-8 while Providence dropped to 3-6.

In his third hat trick performance of the season, Billy Klotz was helped by senior Mark Tarnuzzer (West Hartford, Conn.) and fellow frosh John O'Sullivan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who each registered a pair of goals and one assist for Holy Cross. Senior Shaun McGowan (Garden City, N.Y.) posted his own marker while assisting two others, and Paul Washington (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) had a goal while Mike McKee (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) totaled four assists.

Despite trailing 5-4 at the half, Holy Cross scored six unanswered goals in the third period, thanks in part to freshman Rudy Anderson (Coral Springs, Fla.), who won six of seven faceoff attempts in that quarter, to give HC more time in the Friars' offensive end. Just 26 seconds into the third frame, Billy Klotz knotted the score at five on McKee's assist. HC scored its next two goals on two-consecutive shots, one was stroked by Mark Tarnuzzer at 13:23 on O'Sullivan's feed, then Tarnuzzer returned the favor by assisting O'Sullivan for the eventual game-winning goal at the 12:15 mark to lift HC up 7-5. Klotz and Tarnuzzer scored again in addition to Washington's goal which completed HC's scoring total of 10. Providence's Jonathan Hollister, who had assisted two goals earlier in the contest, provided the lone goal of the fourth quarter for the 10-6 final.

PC jumped out to the 2-0 lead to start the game before McGowan's goal cut the deficit in half. Skip Dunphy's second man-up goal lifted PC to the 3-1 edge before O'Sullivan powered his unassisted marker with 44 seconds remaining in the first that crept HC within one once again. HC's play in the second quarter inspired a momentum swing in spite of the one-goal deficit at the half. In that crucial stretch, HC won 4-of-5 faceoffs and collected 14 ground balls - three each from Marty Gilbert (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and David McWilliams (Northport, N.Y.) - while PC picked up only five.

Junior Brian Hodgdon (Pittstown, N.J.) picked up the win in goal for HC, collecting seven saves. Andrew McMinn and Ron Westgate shared duties for Providence, combining for seven saves. Westgate took home the losing decision after surrendering six goals.

Holy Cross plays at Lafayette College, Saturday, April 12. Game time is 1:00 p.m
