EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Marc Creegan scored three goals as No. 20 Villanova raced to a 7-0 first-half lead on its way to a 9-3 win over Lafayette in the Leopards' home opener on Saturday.

Leading 3-0 after the first quarter, the Wildcats controlled play throughout most of the second period and took a 7-1 lead into halftime. Matt Starker scored his second goal of the day just 11 seconds into the period, while Creegan scored twice just 39 seconds apart midway through the quarter.

Villanova (3-1) out-shot Lafayette 14-3 in the second quarter and won 5-of-6 face-offs in the stanza.

Freshman Andrew Horton's second goal of the season 32 seconds before halftime got the Leopards (0-4) on the board. Villanova added a pair of goals in the third period, including a man-up tally by Dan Fanelli, before the Leopards netted two late scores. Freshman Jon Paulson recorded his team-leading fifth goal of the year with 2:24 left, while Sean Burek closed out the scoring with 17 seconds remaining.

Sophomore Chris Rosa made nine saves for Lafayette, while Joseph Canuso made four saves in just over 55 minutes to earn the win for Villanova. Francis Cattani played the final 4:53 in goal for the Wildcats, allowing Lafayette's final two goals and making a pair of saves.

Villanova held a 10-5 edge in face-offs, including 8-2 in the first half. Chris Colliniates was 10-of-13 on face-offs for the Wildcats.

Lafayette opens Patriot League play on Tuesday, visiting Navy. The Midshipmen, picked to defend their 2004 Patriot League title, were ranked No. 2 in the nation entering this week's action.
