BETHLEHEM, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team fell short in its comeback attempt and dropped the season opener 10-7 to Binghamton on Saturday night at Lehigh's Ulrich Sports Complex. The game time and place were shifted due to unplayable field conditions.

The Leopards got off to an early lead as Pat Lennon scored two of his four goals in the first period. Lafayette goalie Kevin DeVito also started hot, making five saves in the opening session.

Binghamton responded with two quick goals to start the second period as Brian Chaapel and Charlie Cook each found the back of the net, tying the score at 2-2. Lafayette then took advantage of two Binghamton penalties and scored twice on the man-up to go back ahead 4-2. The Leopard goals came from Lennon and Robert McLean. Binghamton then capped the second period scoring with goals from Joe Vavala and Phil Cavallo to send the game to a 4-4 tie at halftime.

The Bearcats dominated the third period, outscoring the Leopards 4-1 to take a commanding 8-5 lead. Cavallo netted two of the Binghamton scores, while John Gaudet and Scott Mitchell each added a goal.

McLean notched his second goal of the night at the end of the third period for the Leopards, but Binghamton added two quick scores to push the margin to 10-5 with 9:34 remaining in the game.

Lafayette never quit and took advantage of concurrent Binghamton penalties as Mike Scolaro scored a man-up goal to trim the lead to 10-6 with 4:26 to go. Less than 30 seconds later, Lennon recorded his fourth goal of the night, but the Leopards drew no closer.
