Lehigh vs. Holy Cross
April 15, 2006
The Game Story:
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Behind a three-goal, one assist performance from freshman Rich Cornetta, Lehigh downed league foe Holy Cross 13-6 on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day to move one step closer towards a berth in the 2006 Patriot League Tournament. Blake Best, Alec Hoof and Michael Zurfluh all added two scores apiece for the Brown and White, who improves to 7-5 overall on the season and 3-2 in league play, while the Crusaders fall to 0-12 overall and 0-5 in league action.

Head coach Chris Wakely discussed the game afterwards. “Just a great all around performance, particularly from our senior class on their day, to enable us to get a crucial league victory. Jeff King again played spectacular, Dave Larson picking up a fast break assist, Dusty Granet seeing time in goal, many solid performances all around.” Wakley continued, “We face a tough stretch next weekend with two games in three days, which we will have to be ready for, but we’ll enjoy this one for now.”

Lehigh dominated the Crusaders in every statistical category on the afternoon, out shooting its opponent 43-23, picking up 42 ground balls to Holy Cross’ 21 and winning 18 of 23 face offs. Best, Cornetta, Matthew Hichborn, Hoof, Larson, Mike Moran and Zurfluh all dished out assists for the Mountain Hawks, while Eric Spirko got the win in goal for Lehigh, sending back eight shots in 42 minutes of action. Dusty Granet and John Park also saw time in net for the Mountain Hawks, sending back one and two shots, respectively.

Lehigh got on the board first when Kevin Houk took a pass from Cornetta and scored his second goal of the season. Cornetta then took a pass from Moran and made it 2-0 Lehigh at the 6:58 mark of the first. Holy Cross scored its first goal of the game at the 3:09 mark of the opening quarter on a Paul LeBlanc score, making the score 2-1 Lehigh. Hoof then put the Brown and White in front 3-1 with just 55 ticks left in the quarter.

John O’Sullivan made the score 3-2 with a score of his own just 1:25 into the second, but Moran, Cornetta, Hoof, and Zurfluh combined for the next five scores to put Lehigh ahead 9-2 heading into halftime.

The Crusaders scored the first two goals of the second half to slice the lead to just five at 9-4 with 11:24 to go, before Best and Hichborn netted three goals in the final seven minutes of the quarter to send Lehigh into the fourth ahead 12-4. The Mountain Hawks scored just once in the final 15 minutes, but it came on a pretty Larson to Diehl feed off of a fast break, giving Lehigh its 16th straight win over Holy Cross in the all-time series.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday, April 21 when the Mountain Hawks travel to Easton to take on archrival Lafayette. Game time is scheduled for 7:00.
