| POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Canisius College men's lacrosse team dropped
their season opener in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse
League to Marist College, 11-6 Saturday afternoon at Leonidoff Field.
The Griffs fall to 1-2 on the season, 0-1 in MAAC play, while Marist
picks up their first win of the year to improve to 1-2, 1-0 MAAC.
Sophomore Greg Campbell (Orchard Park, N.Y.) gave Canisius the early 1-0 lead, scoring an unassisted goal just 1:14 into the game. The Red Foxes would jump on the offensive scoring six unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead before the Blue and Gold could stop the barrage with a goal by junior Jonathan Duggan (Amherst, N.Y.) with 41 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Junior Rick Neward (Williamsville, N.Y.) assisted on the goal for Canisius. A Marist goal by Josh Ben-Eliyahu would start the second half to give the Red Foxes a 7-2 lead at the 2:30 mark. Canisius would scored two quick goals to cut the lead to 7-4 as Neward netted an unassisted tally at 7:27 and junior Matt Condon (Chittenango, N.Y.) added another goal at the 8:10 mark from junior Mark Miyashita (Richmond, B.C.). Marist stuffed the Griffs' rally by scoring three straight goals to grab a 10-4 lead with 12:16 remaining in the game. Duggan and Neward would each add an unassisted goal late in the game for the Griffs to pull within four goals at 10-6, but Marist's Brian Diele scored his fourth of the game with 3:18 left on the clock to seal the win for the Red Foxes. Canisius junior goalie Seth Vath (East Greenbush, N.Y.) posted four saves in net for the Griffs, while Brian Schumeyer stopped 22 shots for Marist. The Griffs return to action Saturday afternoon, March 22, in Hamden, Conn. against Quinnipiac University at 4:00 p.m. |
