Marist vs. Manhattan

The Game Story:
Buffalo, NY -- Fourth-seeded Manhattan College upset top-seeded Marist College, 10-7, in first semifinal game of the 2004 MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship at the Demske Sports Complex on the campus of Canisius College.

The Jaspers took a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, with unassisted goals from Chris Oppito and Nick Cacciatore. Marist cut the lead to one (2-1) as Brian Diele put the Red Foxes on the scoreboard three minutes into the second quarter. Manhattan, however, would score the next three goals to enjoy a 5-1 lead at the half.

Manhattan continued on its scoring run into the third quarter, netting three more goals in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 8-1 lead. Greg Lewis posted his second goal of the game at the 13:49 mark and Justin Otto followed that with a pair of goals over the next two minutes. Marist, however, made a strong attempt to close the gap as the Red Foxes registered three consecutive scores within one minute of play (8-4). The Jaspers responded as Brian Murray scored a goal with 4:22 remaining in the third quarter, and then assisted on Otto's goal at the 1:24 mark. Marist would end the scoring for the quarter as Josh Ben-Eliyahu netted his lone goal of the game with four seconds left.

Less than five minutes into the final stanza, Marist's Sean Sweeney netted an unassisted goal to bring the Red Foxes within four (10-6). Their final goal of the game would come at the 3:58 mark, as Tim Iuculano scored off a pass from Keith Detelj.

John Landers made 11 saves for Manhattan, while Steve Gravino registered 16 stops for Marist.

Manhattan will play the winner of today's second semifinal game between #2 Canisius College and #3 Providence College in the championship game on Sunday, May 9, at noon.
