|Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (April 8, 2006)--Mount St. Mary's rolled past Marist, 14-5, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Marist's Leonidoff Field on Saturday afternoon. In a rematch of last year's MAAC title game, Matt Warner poured in five goals to lead the Mount (2-7, 2-1 MAAC) to the victory. |
Senior Jason Werner added a goal and two assists to become the 19th player in Mount history to reach 100 career points. Last year, Marist downed Mount St. Mary's, 10-6, in the MAAC Championship Game to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Marist (4-4, 3-1 MAAC) broke on top on a Bill Duerr goal 2:41 into the game, but the Mount answered with a Benjamin Mundorf tally just over a minute later to even the score. Duerr struck again with 2:05 left in the opening quarter, but the Mount again answered when Eric Seifert converted a Tilghman Herring pass for the first of his three goals to even the score at 2-2.
Mount St. Mary's scored the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 5-2 lead. Seifert, Mundorf and Warner each scored to give the Mount a three-goal advantage. Andrew Walsh countered for Marist to make the score 5-3 at the half.
The Mount broke the game open in the third quarter. Mundorf scored the first two goals, the second of which gave him a career-high four in the game, to give the Mount a 7-3 lead. After Marist's Mike McGuire's goal, Warner connected for two more scores to send the Mount to the final quarter with a 9-4 lead.
After Werner's goal 1:11 into the final quarter, Warner sealed the win with a pair of scores in a span of 11 seconds to give the Mount a commanding 12-4 lead with 11:19 left in the game. Nick Hautau scored for the Red Foxes to cut the deficit to 12-5, but Warner assisted on goals by Dave Orban and Seifert to round out the scoring in the game.
Warner finished with a season-high seven points (5g, 2a) to pace the Mount attack. Mundorf added a career-high five points (4g, 1a) while Seifert finished with a hat trick for the Mount. Werner chipped in a goal and two assists to reach 100 career points (59g, 41a). Duerr finished with a team-high three points (2g, 1a) for the Red Foxes.
Mount goalkeeper Joe Zolezzi made nine saves while allowing just five goals in the victory. Marist keeper Ryan Penner made eight saves and allowed 12 goals in 57:37 of action. Herring and Shaun Moran each had a team-high four ground balls for the Mount while Dan Neddle scooped up five ground balls in the loss for Marist.
Marist held a 37-34 advantage in shots while edging the Mount, 19-17, in ground balls. Marist went 0-for-4 with on extra-man opportunities while Mount St. Mary's was 0-for0.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, April 15, with a 1:00 p.m. game at Wagner.
