|The Game Story:|
|Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (6-6, 5-2 MAAC) rallied from a 5-0 deficit late in the first half with seven unanswered goals to defeat visiting Siena 7-5 tonight at Leonidoff Field. Junior midfielder Bill Duerr and sophomore midfielder Keith Detelj each tallied two goals and an assist while senior attackman Patrick Van Horne added a pair of goals of his own.|
The Saints (3-11, 1-6 MAAC) led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter after a Matt Walsh goal and would seemingly take control with four goals in the first 10 minutes of the second quarter, two of which were scored by Greg Pelatti.
With 1:34 remaining in the first half, Detelj, making his return to the starting lineup after missing the last nine games due to illness, rifled a long-distance shot past Siena netminder John Bamford to get the Red Foxes on the scoreboard. Detelj would then assist on Duerr's goal 30 seconds before intermission to bring Marist within 5-2 at halftime.
Van Horne and Duerr scored late in the third quarter to draw the Red Foxes within 5-4 going to the fourth quarter, and after Van Horne tied the score 33 seconds into the final period, Detelj scored the game-winner off a pass from junior midfielder Tim Iuculano with 13:46 left. Iuculano, who also assisted on Van Horne's third-quarter goal, added an insurance score with 3:49 to play. Duerr's goal was the 65th of his career and gave him his 100th career point.
Junior goalie Stephen Gravino made eight saves, including a stop of a Walsh shot from point-blank range late, to lead a tremendous Marist defensive effort that shut Siena out for the final 34:44 of play. Senior defenders Mark Paquette and James Taylor recorded six and four ground balls, respectively.
Pelatti had two goals and an assist while Walsh had a goal and an assist as well. Ted Moran and Phillip Ferrara rounded out the scoring for Siena. Bamford recorded 12 saves.
With the win, the Red Foxes clinched a berth in next weekend's MAAC Championships, which the team will host at Leonidoff Field. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Marist concludes the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. against VMI at Leonidoff Field. A special ceremony will honor Marist seniors Van Horne, Paquette, Taylor, Dan Kushner and Dan Bellew before their final regular-season home game.
