Men's Lax Prevails 10-5 Over MAAC Foe St. Joe's In MAAC Opener

Kingston, NY - The Marist College men's lacrosse team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League play this afternoon, defeating visiting St. Joseph's, 10-5, at Dietz Stadium. The Red Foxes are now 2-1on the year and 1-0 in conference action, while the Hawks fall to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in MAAC play.

Marist took a 6-1 lead on a Sean Sweeney (Farmingdale, NY) with 5:51 to play in the second quarter, but the Hawks would not go quietly. St. Joseph's, which played in the 2003 MAAC Tournament Final, tallied a goal with 2:08 to play in the half and scored first in the second half, just one minute in, to cut the lead to 6-3. The teams traded the next two goals, with Tim Iuculano (Silver Spring, MD) giving Marist its first goal of the fourth quarter, and an 8-4 lead with 9:59 to play. After the Hawks cut the deficit to 8-5 with 6:09 to play, Marist added two goals in the final 129 seconds to seal the win.

Iuculano led the Red Foxes effort on the afternoon as he tallied three goals and two assists. He tallied a goal in the first, second and fourth quarter, and assisted on a goal in the first two quarters of play.

Steve Gravino (Oceanside, NY) was stellar in goal for the Red Foxes, making 16 saves in 60:00 of play. He made seven stops in the fourth quarter to help fend off the Hawks furious rally attempts. His St. Joseph's counterpart, Travis McDonnell (Aberdeen, MD) made 13 stops, including eight in the second quarter, but none in the fourth quarter.

Sweeney finished the day with two goals, as did Keith Detelj (Sayville, NY), with each player contributing an assist as well. Pat Van Horne (Liverpool, NY) had two goals for Marist, while Brian Diele (Stewart Manor, NY) had two assists. Billy Duerr (Manasquan, NJ) added a goal in the Red Foxes win and Andrew Walsh (Liverpool, NY) had one assist.

Kevin McGrann led the Hawks with two goals, while Matt Mueller added a goal and an assist.

The teams ended up even on face-offs, both winning nine, but Marist earned its stripes in man-down situations. The Hawks ended the game 0-7 in situations in which they had an extra player on the field due to penalty.

The Red Foxes return to action on Thursday, March 18th at 4:00 pm, when they host Canisius in a MAAC Lacrosse League matchup.
