The Game Story:
Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's lacrosse won their first game of the season in dramatic fashion, defeating MAAC Lacrosse League opponent VMI in overtime, 12-11, on a rain-soaked Leonidoff Field on Saturday. Josh Ben-Eliyahu (E. Setauket, NY) scored the game-winner with 3:31 to play in sudden-death overtime to clinch the win for the Red Foxes, who improve to 1-7 on the season, with a 1-2 record in the MAAC. VMI falls to 3-4, with a 3-1 mark in the conference.

Marist led 2-1 after the first quarter of play on a pair of goals by Billy Duerr (Manasquan, NJ). The Keydets would respond with four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead with 11:30 to play in the second. Ben-Eliyahu put the Red Foxes on the board at 7:43 in the second, and Pat Van Horne (Liverpool, NY) and Brian Diele (Stewart Manor, NY) added goals to tie the game at 5-5 at halftime.

The Red Foxes outscored the Keydets 3-2 in the third quarter to take an 8-7 lead into the final quarter. Pat Scully (Longmeadow, MA), Duerr, and Van Horne each tallied goals in the third to give the Red Foxes their first lead of the game, since they were up 2-1 in the second quarter.

Marist would tack on two more goals to start the fourth to increase the lead to 10-7. Diele scored off a nice pass from Billy Dziedzic (Southington, CT) with 14:51 in regulation, then Van Horne scored unassisted just over a minute later at 13:46. VMI would answer with four consecutive goals, two of them coming by Leo McInerney, to take an 11-10 lead with 6:02 to play.

Andrew Walsh (Liverpool, NY) tied the game at 11-11 with 0:32 to play in regulation to set up Ben-Eliyahu's game-winner in overtime off a nice pass from Tim Iuculano (Silver Spring, MD).

Duerr led Marist with three goals, while Ben-Eliyahu, Van Horne, Diele, and Walsh each scored twice. Steve Graviano (Oceanside, NY) made three saves in the first half, before giving way to Bobby Gross (Huntington, NY), who collected four saves in the win.

McInerney led VMI with five goals and one assist, while Brian Niven and Gabe McCaig scored two goals apiece for the Keydets. Brian Ward played the entire game in goal, making 11 saves.

The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, April 2nd, when they travel to Emmitsburg, MD to take on MAAC opponent Mount St. Mary's at 2:00 p.m.
