The Game Story:
College Park, Md. (February 8, 2014)-The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team opened the 2014 season with a 16-3 loss at No. 6 Maryland on Saturday afternoon. The Terrapins stormed to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter before the Mount responded with a pair of goals. Mike Chanenchuk, Connor Cannizzaro, Jay Carlson and Matt Rambo each netted goals to put Maryland ahead 4-0 in the opening five minutes. After Henry West made it 5-0 with 5:35 left in the first quarter, the Mount's Ryan Mamon scored his first collegiate goal to put the Mount on the scoreboard. Bubba Johnson's first career goal with 16 seconds left in the first quarter cut the Mount's deficit to 5-2. Maryland, however, took control of the game by scoring all six goals in the second quarter to push the lead to 11-2. In the third quarter, Rambo and Chanenchuk each scored to give Maryland a 13-2 lead before the Mount's Robert Jones tallied his first career tally. Jones scored an extra man goal on a feed from Mark Hojnoski. Maryland scored the final two goals of the third, and added a late goal in the final quarter for the 16-3 win. Chris Klaiber started for the Mount in goal, allowing eight goals with seven saves in just over a quarter of action. Frankie McCarthy allowed eight goals while also making seven saves for the Mount the rest of the way. Nick Haley won 9 of 20 face-offs for the Mount while Brett Shukri and Tommy Lyons had team-highs with three ground balls each. Jones led the Mount offense with a goal and an assist and a team-high four shots. Rambo led Maryland with four goals and two assists while Chanenchuk added three goals and one assist. Carlson finished with three goals with Cannizzaro adding two goals and one assist. Niko Amato allowed three goals with seven saves in 45:00 in the cage. Maryland outshot the Mount, 44-21, in the game while holding a 49-19 edge in ground balls. The Mount returns to action on Wednesday, February 12, with a 3:00 p.m. game at Georgetown.
